At the "other" place, I'm in the middle of a discussion regarding medication. My family, while not holistic, tend to not take any medications past aspirin or pain medication. My sister refused chemo during her fight with breast cancer and my Dad refused medication other than pain during his bout with Rheumatoid Arthritis.
My son was diagnosed with ADHD-we decided to deal with it VS. the medical approach. He and his wife have given us 2 beautiful Grandsons but I always wonder what would have happened had we used Ritalin. I guess I would rather see my son as he is than medicated state.

Is there a right or wrong in this? Is it black and white ?

Nothing is ever black or white and what might be wrong for one person might be right for another. Sorry there are no crystal balls to foresee what is the best. A lot of things are trial and error especially when it comes to medications.

It's not a black or white issue, I don't think...

I tend not to take meds unless I really, really have to. And even then, it's usually not a successful venture for me for the following reasons:

The meds either:
1. Don't work for me at all, or
2. Initially work for me, then stop working, or
3. Give me adverse or allergic reaction(s) and I have to go off of them immediately.

Doctors in general are perplexed when they see me. Unfortunately, a lot of them don't know what to do for me anymore. But, it's just how I am...there are some others in my family that are the same way with meds.

I always choose medicine as the last resort. That being said, I've just resolved an issue that started in October of last year that could have been resolved in weeks. Instead, I delayed and put off seeing the doctor. Saw 2 docs in the interim who were quacks and went the wrong way. Current doc got it right on the first try. Was gone in 2 weeks.

Medicine has its uses. :yesnod:

Yea, sensitive issue. I"m not gonna lie, sometimes I think people use medications as a crutch. I keep thinking, what would have happened 50 years ago-before this medication existed ? I'm not trying to be insensitive, but just want to know-what would you do if the drugs ran out?

Personally I feel like meds create more problems than they fix, and I also think they are a contributor to cancer...besides anti-biotics, I only use them as a last resort.

I dont take aspirin, tylenol...only thing i have is some mucinex 1000mg from one time I had a massive upper respiratory infection...honestly, it didnt do shit.

Vatorman, I haven't given this a lot of thought yet over the years I've consciously avoided meds at every turn, except for obvious pain relief.

So far so good!

Mucinex isn't generally used for upper respiratory infections. If it didn't work for you, you didn't need it. The one thing people don't realize is with mucinex you have to drink plenty of water with it since it's a mucolytic. Since a lot of my patients have lower respiratory infections, pneumonia, etc. if they are having trouble coughing up junk I have the doctor order it. This is one OTC I keep on hand since it does a great job when used appropriately.

I used, I think DM....1000mg, I took it with alot of water, and also took a tylenol, I tripped ****ing balls for about an hour, but my head never cleared up.

I bought a neti-pot and it fixed me right up.

There again mucinex is not for upper airway infections it's meant for lower respiratory infections that is why it did not work for you.

Be glad you don't live in the 50 years ago range. Nothing wrong with having the appropriate meds for your issue. I'm not saying crutch type stuff, but real how the hell else are you going to fix it type issues. I have a type 1 diabetic daughter who just turned 10 she was diagnosed at 4. I thank god she has today's medicine, and not the past crap that diabetics had to go through.

You do what you want, but if it makes life better and does no harm why not? Just my .02:cert:

Word of advice to anyone, research medications before you take them and preferably before you pick up the prescription. Doctors aren't always infallible and three thing one of my college professors always told me was
1. You are there to help keep the doctors from killing a patient 2. You can't always prevent a doctor from killing a patient and 3, when a doctor makes a mistake he buries them.
You have to be your own advocate or have someone be your advocate and check everything. If you are in the hospital, question each time what each specific pill is and what it is for.
Another thing, if you use different pharmacies make sure they know all the medications you take so you don't end up taking something that doesn't go well with another medication.
Doctors are human and just like everything else humans touch the margin for errors is always there.

The only med I'm voluntarily on is beer.

When I got hit with high blood pressure I hated having to go on a med.

I think they most definitely have a place, but little as possible.

I have only three cures in my arsenal.

Hangover - Aspirin and time

Flu/cold - Nyquil and time

Anything else - Time

I have taken anti-biotics before but I think they are way over prescribed.

:iagree: I currently take 5 medications each morning.

Diovan - blood pressure
Zocor - cholesterol
Synthroid - thyroid
Prilosec - heartburn
Baby asprin - heart

Sucks getting old but these med's have done the trick for me in all areas described above.

I too try to avoid medicine, unless it's absolutely necessary.

My 7 year old is on Ritalin when he's with his mom. He does have trouble focusing in school when he's not on it. It kills me when I pick him up to see him all drugged out like that. :(

When I have him on the weekends, he's not on the patch, and he does get along just great. I do have to remind him of a few things, but as his parent, that's my job. :dunno:

Too bad his mother doesn't take parenting seriously. :(

When something ails me, I go to the mom and pop vitamin store. There is always a natural remedy that takes care of my issue. Antibiotics nearly destroyed my wife's immune system, from over prescribing when she was younger. She has to be on her deathbed before she will even consider going to a doctor. Natural remedies and time always works for us.
