View Full Version : stereo reciever question...5.1 vs 2.1

I am going to post this over here too for the audio folks.
:seasix::)
I am thinking about buying a receiver to use just for music(on boat).......NO surround sound. I was going to just order a 2 channel receiver with a sub out. I want to be able to use book shelf speakers and run a small powered sub for low end. Would there be any difference using a 5.1 receiver and just using 2 front channels vs a dedicated 2 channel stereo receiver assuming RMS power is the same? Do you lose something on a 5.1 receiver playing just music?

most of the 5.1 / 6.1 receivers allow you to configure it for different uses. The one I have downstairs is 5.1; but the configuration setup in the receiver was told it was a 2 speaker system w/sub.

You should just use your beloved iphone with a speaker dock.
Just listen to the voices in your head, that way everyone get's to listen to whatever they want.

5.1 you can do alot more with, and will yield a much deeper and intricate sound experience...but if you are only going to have 2 speakers, no point in getting a 5 channel.
If you ever wanted to go with more speakers later you would have to use an amp...with a 2.1.

:iagree:
Although if you're doing music only, why not stick with a good quality, marine grade source unit and 2 channel amp?
Highly recommended by a lot of folks:

To answer your question... a 5.1 ch system will run in 2.1 mode just fine. Just change the receiver from "Surround" mode to "stereo".

No.
No.
The only difference you get is more flexibility with a receiver over a 2 channel amp.
Music only(2 channel amps) depending on the quality and who makes them may have cleaner output because there is a lot less processing going on but in reality there will no difference.

I have a fairly nice "built it" marine system. I was just wanting a home unit #1 to put receiver in cabinet where VCR is and #2 to be able to put speakers on dock and serenade teh ducks.

That is what I wanted to know. It looks like I am in the market for a cheapish 5.1 receiver.

You can get a Yamaha or Pio for around the $225 mark.
In a 5.1 receiver you may have to go in to the settings and set it up to use the sub in 2 channel mode.

That is what I was thinking. Surround units are easy to find locally......2.1 units you need to order....at least around here.

You should invite Chas and Aerovette over to help hook it up.
Be sure to take video.

I never had a problem with him.
If you take him in jest you'll be fine.
But, I agree. I think Aero wants to run his fingers through his hair. :D

if it's just for music why use a 120v system? Why not an automotive or marine radio?

The biggest reason is to fill up hole where the VCR is. A receiver would fit perfectly there. My boat system is pretty nice, but it is what it is. It is really cheaper to do this than to go nuts with my marine system.....I tend to go overboard when upgrading.

Gotcha, that was my question. I am also very hesitant to put any ac audio related components in a marine environment. Although, you are doing all fresh water IIRC.
I guess with a fairly decent converter you should be able to get 5+ years out of a home AVR.
I've got an old Denon 3806 laying around, but probably a bit much for what you want.
Kingpin? :bigears:
DENON US (http://usa.denon.com/us/Product/Pages/ProductDetail.aspx?PCatId=AVSolutions(DenonNA)&CatId=AVReceivers(DenonNA)&Pid=AVR3806(DenonNA))
I did my Dad's old boat with some very mid-grade Jensen goodies (4 channel set up) 2 on the bridge and 2 in the stern.
They sounded great and were still playing cleanly 3 years later when he sold it.

It would definitely work.
It all depends if he wants something new and the price your asking for it.

Thanks for all y'alls help. I am going to measure the space at the boat and see exactly how much space I have. I would like to upgrade my home Onkyo so maybe I can use that and get a new one for the house.......what a great idea Thomas!! WOOHOO!!!

Sounds perfect. You can run that old Onkyo until it kicks.
Now, you've got the "what to get for the home" dilemma.

The only thing I don't like about my Onkyo is it runs hot. I think it is also a little underpowered 90x7 I think. I doubt I go with Onkyo again. :hurray:

90 watts is enough to knock your head off most of the time. A lot of ways amp mfrs over rate their equipment.
The Parasound amp in my upstairs room is often only pushing 5-10 watts.
Greatly depends on what you want your AVR to do for you.
Preamp only with separate amps
One piece to do it all (fine for lg bookshelf speakers and smaller)
Denon, Pioneer, Marantz etc have all been solid avrs the last 10+ years.

Once you go separates you never go back.
If you can't hear the difference your deaf. :D
Granted most people will never need separate amps. But for someone who is pushing it during watching movies the headroom separate amps offer is often needed and will prolong the life of a receiver.

Because anything with the word "marine" in the description costs two or three times as much as a non-marine unit with the same functionality. :shots:
