This is Lizzy. A long haired purebred Dalmatian. Pretty rare. She's a rescue. The Dal folks in the southern states put together a relay to get Lizzy to her from The Woodlands Texas, to her forever home in Warrington PA. . A friend of mine here in MN worked out all the logistics and organized the entire thing.

1600 miles, several sleepovers, and lots of driving later, Lizzy is in her forever home. :cert:

The woman who put all this together is 45 years in Dals and this is the first liver long hair she's ever seen.

You'd think there was some Setter in her if she wasn't pure Dalmatian.

This isn't the first time I've seen this happen in the dog hobby we're involved with. There are Dal breeders all over the country who are involved in this hobby for the DOGS, not the ribbons. The network is small but pretty close knit. Bash Facebook, but it goes a long way with keeping everyone in touch and in the loop. :cert:

Very cool!

Did they do a test to assure she's purebred, Thomas? Or did they already know her pedigree, or just know by her "look"?

Alot of people don't realize that there are long haired Weims, too, as they are rare, as well.

They know by her pedigree. Black long hair Dals are around, although pretty uncommon. LIVER long hairs however are very rare. My friend has never seen one in 45 year's in this breed.

It never ceases to amaze me that pedigreed, gorgeous dogs end up in rescue. How did she end up there?

Wow that your friend had never seen one! That proves just how rare they are, obviously!

Honestly, that's not always the case, though.

Sometimes life's circumstances change and there's nothing you can do about it. That's how I got my first Golden Retreiver, an eight-year old named Bear. His family was a military one, and they received orders to permanently change their duty station. They had to live on base (they couldn't afford anything off-base) and animals were not allowed. They tried at first to sell him (only to those who they knew would give him a good home; they turned several people down).

They finally decided to give him away in hopes of speeding up the process (again, only to a good, approved home). They told me that if I hadn't come along they would have had no alternative but to give him to a rescue organization.

Truth.

When I got divorced 17 years ago, the only thing I took was my dog. I contacted my breeder, who found a foster home for him until I got on my feet again. The people who took him owned his littermate, and have been very good friends of mine ever since.

Here are three of the liitermates at 12 years old. Mine on the left, Stella in the middle, and Killian on the right. :cert:

Sea Six,

You're very right. Working Incoming for our group, I hear it all. Some people just want to dump their dogs for totally idiotic (in my opinion) reasons, and others need a new home for them for reasons that literally make me cry.

Of course, being with a rescue is a great place for a dog to be. Rescues don't euthanize, and we totally vet the dogs and treat them as our own. Not a bad spot to be in as a dog! :)

My cockapoo, Fletcher, was an owner surrender due to the tornado. When I saw him at the humane society I couldn't believe someone had given him up.

"A" not "O" young lady. At the very least you could spell it correctly. :D

Dal's are an active breed. Not "Hyper" like so many people claim. They used to run with horse drawn carriages, and are capable of covering a lot of distance without getting tired.

While they certainly enjoy their time flopped on the sofa, they're ready to go at a moments notice. :cert:

Just like Weims, although in both cases, we should specify "once out of the puppy stage!"

Yeah, that. My terrier was off the walls up until the beginning of the end, and he had to be on a leash at all times. I'm not looking for a dog that will be crazy for the next 13 years. I'm curious to find out if Dalmatians are a breed that you need to keep active all day long.

No, but they do stay in puppy mode plenty long. My wife says it's like having a house full of toddlers. :D

The biggest thing is training. Properly trained Dal's make great pets. :cert:

Plus the "But I hear they're bad with kids" argument is BS.
