View Full Version : Danica makes NASCAR history...

A year after making her Sprint Cup Series debut in the same race, Danica Patrick will lead the field to the green flag for the Daytona 500 after qualifying on the pole during Sunday's front row qualifying session at Daytona International Speedway.

It wasn't necessarily a surprise. Patrick posted the fastest speed of Saturday's two qualifying practices and ran slightly faster during her second qualifying lap on Sunday, knocking owner and teammate Tony Stewart from the provisional pole. She's the first woman to win a pole position in Sprint Cup Series history.

NASCAR is grabbing for straws as viewership has hit a low.
This'll prolly be the big draw they need to bring back lost viewers.
I say the fix was in for her to take the poll.

It's all about the show vs. racing. TV ratings, ticket sales, all have fallen tremendously over the last few yrs. My dad took us to Daytona for the first time back in 1971. A common blue collar worker could identify with the drivers and crew back then. Now, they are multi-millionaire corporate spokesmen vs. race car drivers.

Richard Petty even admitted that back in the day officials would see things he was doing and never say anything to him. He helped put, 'meat in the seats' the same way Earnhardt Sr. did.

She needs the killer instinct, something she just has not had the stones, or maybe permission, to use yet. Everyone has it in them if pressed hard enough.
If she finally decides to not get pushed around, and has the stamina to run 500, she could win.
Stewart may just give her the green light to whip the claws out.... That would make for a very enjoyable race.....:yesnod:

The reason I dislike her is due to her being marketed the way she is. According to the way she's marketed, she's a real race winner. However, she hasn't won crap. She gets in wrecks, throws tantrums, and talks shit about everyone including her own crew. Of course, none of the fault is ever hers. Another thing is the ESPN/Nascar commentators spouting off about her every three seconds. Add it all up and it gets old....very quickly. Now, if it was some dude, I'd feel the same way. So, you can call me an equal opportunity hater. Her opportunity is just now, though.

She won an IRL race. It was a gas mileage race, but she still crossed the line first. No matter how you spin it, she is mixing it up at 200+ mph with the big boys. She deserves the same respect you give to any B rated Nascar driver.

My $.02....

First, she is a capable driver, she has shown some real flashes of hope. She was looking great in 1 of the Nationwide road course races last year until she had some bad luck. You don't just take a no-talent clown and pass guys like Ron Fellows, Boris Said, Jacques Villeneuve, etc on a road course in a big stock car. That takes talent.

On the other hand, she has yet to show anything either in Indy cars or NASCAR that says she is capable of being a contender for wins on a regular basis. As in the race I mentioned above, something ALWAYS happens.

She spent 7 seasons in top notch cars in the IRL driving for Rahal and Andretti. In that time, she managed 1 win (in a race where Helio dominated and ran out of gas). She led 124 laps in her career. Only in 2007 did she average a finish in the top 10 (8th). Given the level of competition of the Indy cars over most of her career there... not exactly awe inspiring.

For comparison: Over those same years her teammates, in the same cars, won 16 races including an Indy 500, led 2480 laps, and won an IRL championship (Dario 2007)

So far in NASCAR, she has managed... well... not much other than tearing up a lot of cars.

I personally hope she does well. I think that it would be good for the sport and good for racing across the board. More attention here branches out to more attention everywhere. With that said, I think the chances of her getting a win in NASCAR with the competition being as tough as it is are pretty slim but who knows... I could be wrong. She'll be in great cars with a good crew so I guess anything is possible.

Folks paying attention would have seen that she has been one of the 5 fastest cars the whole week long. While all the cars meet minimum weight and right side weight, a smaller driver allows the ballast to be placed at the most advantageous positions. Add that to Hendrick power and a small gust on the back straight, and it is no surprise she got the pole.

Stamina at Daytona shouldn't be an issue as it's much more mental than physical at that track. My memory is that she has been caught up in wrecks much more than she has caused them. If she can stay clean and she and her team don't make mistakes, she could be in the mix at the end.

After watching the Unlimited, I'm wondering if there will be a dozen cars left at the end...

Her detractors say she is over rated and her fans say she has never really been given a chance to win.

Although anybody who says she has never been given a chance hasn't been paying attention for the last decade. She has had some of the best equipment out there since her rookie season in IRL.

imo. watching her last season she had some very nice runs going and poop happens. while my driver , jr is a big name those 2 drive alot the same. they dont fight for positions, seems like they both try and sneak their cars around the track. when Jr gets raddled he heads to the back and blames it on the handling.

And Tony wiped half the pack in the Unlimited. It's just the nature of the sport.

Pole winners rarely win, but I hope it's enough for her to finish well. Unfortunately Nascar isn't about winning, but finishing consistently. They've improved that, but it's still true.

Really now, who's being a little sexist here?

She's raced for years and nobody has "tried to take her out." She's out there racing just like 42 other people. It's not like she's the first girl on the track and as you go down to Nationwide and Trucks there are several women out there with NASCAR hard cards.

The other drivers don't care - she's just another car.

She's a good driver. Unfortunately for her she's in a division now with about 25 great drivers. And two or three that could win in any series there is. Montoya's won in F1, half the field won Busch Series Championships, She's won one race in IndyCar. Her boss Tony Stewart won the championship in that.

What bathroom she uses doesn't matter at all. Her advantage this time is she has just as much experience in the Gen 6 car as everybody else.

RedLS1GTO

Unfortunately for her she's in a division now with about 25 great drivers...

Sam Hornish, Dario Franchitti, Jacques Villeneuve, AJ Allmendinger, etc can attest to the fact that NASCAR isn't as easy as it might look...

Even JPM has had less than stellar results since making the switch with his only wins coming on road courses and only finishing in the top 15 in points once in 6 seasons (2009 - 8th).

Wathen1955
02-18-2013, 2:48pm
My take: NASCAR is doing this to increase attendance at the races. With the price of gas approaching $4/gal again ($4.20 here in southern ca), they are trying to use every little bit of help to encourage attendance. If you google NASCAR Attendance, there are several articles about this issue. That is why she is hyped all the time. I believe she does have talent to drive, and having a sexy women there may bring more males to the show.

Just my .02 :D

I highly doubt NASCAR is letting her run something illegal to give her an advantage, if they were going to do anything it would just be an intentional miss-reading of the time clock, and I seriously doubt that also.

She had the fastest car that day.. and drove it well.

Driving the track alone is a whole different thing than in traffic with the air though.

And I have a feeling some teams might not work with her for the draft. :island14:

Through out the race teams will be talking to each other on radios, and drivers will get notice that they will be getting help (draft) from another driver/team in the next lap sometimes.

They have to work together and do this to make gains on the track.

The fastest car running by itself is not always the fastest car in traffic, and often some cars can run longer on the same set of tires without slowing down as much.

Chassis adjustments through the race, and pit stops are always an important factor.

Starting from the pole is nice, but it's going to be a long 500 miles to the finish, and only the last lap will matter. :yesnod:

Can she win?

Sure why not? :island14:
