Need a camera that can get high speed shots. Like a horse galloping.
And has good night time or low light capability.
Can it be done under $500...$6oo...$700?

Can you be more specific about the lighting conditions and just how dark ?
Some camera bodies handle ISO better than others. But...you pay for it $$$. The same goes for focus speed. The kind of conditions you are talking about REALLY push the limits of a DSLR and lens. Are you willing to LEARN how to adjust the camera to those conditions ? Or just want to point/shoot and hope to get a good shot ? Do you want to print them or just post online ? Do you plan to shoot any video ?
I shot this at a rodeo last year. The sun was near or sinking on the horizon. They had some flood lights up and that was it. I was sitting in the stands and shot this handheld. The action is so fast that a tri or monopad won't do you any good.
A used 'L' class Canon lens will start in the high hundreds and go up.
I paid $200 for a used Canon body. I would like a faster zoom lens.

I suggest you start with a Canon Rebel kit. You can get one online at amazon or in the store at Wal Mart. You can also find them used on CL, etc...

Amazon.com: Nikon D3100 14.2MP Digital SLR Camera with 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AF-S DX VR Nikkor Zoom Lens: Camera & Photo (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003ZYF3LO/ref=s9_simh_gw_p421_d4_i2?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_r=1XDKJ4NSGG81YFGYMCSX&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=1389517282&pf_rd_i=507846)
That's a very good camera for your purposes. Notice that the kit includes a "VR" (vibration reduction) lens, which I'd highly recommend for hand-held photography. (Canon calls that feature "IS" (image stabilization)). That 18-55mm lens is good for close indoor to moderate distance outdoor pics. You may eventually want to add a 55-200m lens for longer outdoor pics. Both of those are "kit" lens, and so are commonly available at reasonable prices in the refurbished market. You can spend more for even better quality, but your money is better spent at this level to start.
VR is good at compensating for camera shake on indoor shots, where you commonly have low-light and longer exposure times. It also helps on outdoor shots, where distances are commonly longer, and photographer and subject might be moving. Whatever brand camera you get, I highly recommend that feature.
I have a Nikon D40, which is an older model in the same niche currently occupied by the D3100. Mine originally came with a non-VR lens, but later models added the VR feature, and I upgraded when they came available at refurbished prices. I currently have an 18-55 and a 55-200 lens, both VR and both "kit" lens. It would be nice to have a single lens that covered that entire range, but the price was significantly higher. What I have now seems like the proper compromise for my current needs.
Amazon's a good source, but I also like these...
Nikon refurbished... Nikon Store - Nikon Outlet (http://shop.nikonusa.com/store/nikonusa/en_US/list/ThemeID.18145600/Nikon_Outlet/categoryID.43896400)
Adorama... Adorama's Nikon Store (http://www.adorama.com/catalog.tpl?op=brands&brand=Nikon&humansrch=nikon&term=nikon)
After my original purchase, I bought a lot of upgrades and accessories from Adorama. I like them.

Stability is in the lens. Different names per mfg. IS, VC, VR, etc...
Both, Tamron and Sigma, offer some good glass for less than Canon/Nikon price. But, you really loose $ if you decide to resell.

some reasons for getting decent equipment
I had to crop this
http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e28/visund/Pets/JulieUnderWillowTree.jpg
from this, and the light is really washed out compared to what it actually was.
And exploding the picture any more just made it grainy. So a zoom lens would have definitely helped.
http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e28/visund/Pets/DSC02739.jpg
This is a shot of Oakie while he is running with me and Julie. I took the shot from on top of Julie. The light is low, I'm moving (up, down and all around) and the subject, Oakie is moving. It would have been great if I could have got it in clarity. He was wet, muscles and veins bulged and just the intense look on his face was awesome. With a high speed series of shots, I could have gotten some excellent pictures.
http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e28/visund/Pets/DSC02637.jpg
Night shot, but obviously a failure. I've tried several times to the horses silhouette against a full moon, and although I can get the pose and shot, it never turns out.
In the summer, that field gets inundated with fire-flies. Been trying forever to get a shot of that.
http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e28/visund/Pets/DSC02492.jpg
Another missed opportunity
It was early spring and windy as hell. Julie has a gorgeous mane, and it looked really good blowing in the wind. Unfortunately, I couldn't get the shot quick enough. And I had to get in close to get the pictures. Well, she's huggy, and wants to be petted more than she wants to pose. :funny:

Personally I'm not a fan of Tamron. I've tried a few of them, and my Canon's out perform them hands down.
This is a tricky shot to begin with. You're shooting right into the sun for starter's and that will trick even the most sophisticated metering system. Switch to Center Weighted or even Spot Metering for these, and try +1 Exposure Value.

You can do some exposure fixing using the computer Light, contrast, tint, color temp, etc.
I'm a really crappy photog, as I don't care to learn the camera that I have. My Sony Cyber-Shot does have a "Sports/Action" setting on it. It's adequate for a non-pro, like myself.
My best friend has been a professional photographer for all of his life.. He's got some serious stuff. I think he carries around $15k worth of equipment with him on a daily basis.

Which ones?
The Tamron's? 70-300, and the 24-70.
The biggest difference was the 70-300 against my 100-400 Canon. The Tamron didn't focus as quickly as my Canon. Not even close. I also thought the shots were softer.
Same results from the 24-70.
A friend of mine and I were shooting a wedding a while back. The lighting inside was terrible. I walked away with a higher percentage of shots like the ones below, than she did.

That's what I've found in my VERY limited shooting with Tamron. The friend of mine that had the 70-300 Tamron sold it for a Canon 400mm prime. He's a big wildlife shooter.

Prime is almost always better than zoom for image sharpness. Tamron, Sigma and Tokina are cheaper than Canon and Nikon. You can't reasonably expect the same optical quality. That said, Tamron does have a few lenses that have gotten good reviews. The 90mm 2.8 macro, 180 3.5, 300 2.8, 70-210 2.8 and the 200-500 all got good scores optically. Notice that there are only 2 zooms listed. Canon and Nikon are much better with zoom lenses.

My recommendation would be something like the Nikon D5200 or 3200. Both of those have better low light capability than the 5100 and 3100. Add the 55-200VR. The D5200 is suggested at $799.95. Nikon D5200 DX-Format Digital SLR Camera Body - Black 1501 (http://www.adorama.com/INKD5200.html)

ummm....hmmmm...uh....
I take it that that's a log of all the settings and conditions that the pictures were created under. Did the camera record that or the lens?
Another silly question; Do all lenses fit all camera's?

Just a thought Oddball.
Do they have continuing education classes in your town, where you could take a night class in photography? That might be something for you to ponder. It would get you out meeting people and learning stuff...:seasix:

Camera. Even the basic model Rebel captures this.

Nope. Canon and Nikon have different mounts. Some of the Canon lens are NOT interchangeable either. Great huh?!?!?!

The 55-250 that Yamma, mentioned is @ $150.00 now. I had it for a short time. Keep it within its limits and it is a decent lens.
Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III for $100 or Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS $149 - Slickdeals.net (http://slickdeals.net/f/5863536-Canon-EF-75-300mm-f-4-5-6-III-for-100-or-Canon-EF-S-55-250mm-f-4-5-6-IS-149)

Watch this page on February 24. Rumor is there will be 20% and 30% off on refurb lenses, bodies, and kits. The good 'L' stuff goes really fast though.

miserly... follow C5SilverBullet's suggestion and get the cheap Nikon DSLR. You might be surprised how well it works. (I like mine, despite its limitations.)
creative... damn the cost, spend the money, you'll hate yourself if you don't. Chances are the money spent won't affect your lifestyle, and what else were you going to spend it on anyway.
