View Full Version : Wow, listening to my boss interview a candidate...

On a conference call, Boss asked him why he performed a particular function in his last job, he couldn't tell us why he did it or why it might be needed... He has a EE from (wait for it).......Alexandria University...........like in Alexandria Egypt. He is starting to sound desperate as the interview is going on. He knows some terms but more of a 'user' than an engineer. I think he is realizing that we want him to actually contribute not just look at a computer screen. I'm not getting a warm fuzzy about this guy.

First of all hes not a guy, hes an engineer. I certainly don't dislike him because hes from Egypt, its just that I am a demanding person and I demand to work with someone who will be able to actually contribute to the project, not just fill an open req. I am on the interview calls because I will be working directly with the person on a daily basis on a 6 month project. I just don't think this is the guy. :nonod:

would a guy that knew everything needed for the job - but didn't have a degree - even get an interview ?

At my job, yes. As long as you have experience and know WTF you are doing, I dont give a rats ass what a piece of paper says.

I gather if one has to Google "DBA" that one needn't bother applying?

:D

PS - I hate databases with a passion!

Either you are an engineer or you are not. It's pretty hard to fake.

Wonder how many Americans were passed over for an interview...

...oh wait...that's right...we don't have anyone capable of doing engineering work from this country anymore.

I'm no engineer. Hell, I don't even ride on trains. But I can figure shit out.

Electrical Engineering isn't something you just "figure out". Either you have the background, the math, the physics, the engineering expertise, or you do not. There's no "figuring out" shit.

That's like saying "I'm not a doctor, but I can figure shit out."

I've worked with some briliant people; just to learn out later that they didn't have a degree.

Some people have all the abilities you mentioned; but never took one credit-minute of college.

It's a shame if the truly brilliant (that way due to natural talent and proven work history) can't even get an interview today because of no degree. Instead, companies are interviewing people from foreign countries solely because they have a diploma.

I'm trying to find the part that says one has to have the degree.

What I am saying is that it is impossible to fake having the underlying knowledge of a subject such as Electrical Engineering. Either you have it, in spades, or you do not.

Just curious, how many applicants do you have? Are you required to consider international applicants?

Well, I work for an international company, based in Europe but with a North American division. Having said that I don't know what the requirements are for them to hire Americans or internationally. 5 applications made through the initial screening process, 2 have already been evaluated and found lacking by the staff. One of them was an American with a history and baggage who would not have been a good fit with the group. The second guy was an international candidate, after talking with him we decided he just didn't have the analytic skills we needed for the position. Remaining are one more American guy and two more international candidates. I read their resumes and actually the American guy has a background in Database creation and implementation. not what we need for this position.

Well I wish more companies looked at the individual instead of a paper saying they have a degree. The place I work at looks at the paper degree and not the individual. They also look at how to block people to keep them in a position more favorable to the current manager. Twice now I've been blocked from other areas at our plant just so I could stay doing what I do, because I do it very well. 30 Years experience in planning/reliability and I keep getting held back. UGH.

It sounds like you feel bad about this...feck 'em, he either lied about qualifications or is a idiot, either way he doesn't deserve the position... happy hunting
