We have had a CPA do our taxes for the past few years. I work for a business where I receive a standard W2. I also own a small portion of our construction division where I receive a Schedule K1 for distributions. Due to some circumstances in our household, we have always felt it was in our best interest to have a CPA do them.
Our CPA has charged us $265.00 for the past three years. I recently got an email from her saying that our new rate was going to be $400.00. That's quite an increase. I wish I got that kind of a raise in the past few years. (haven't had one in five years)
We have many friends that do their own taxes using TurboTax. We are looking to go somewhere else for our tax prep. Anyone using Liberty, Jackson Hewitt, H & R Block?
What say VB?

That's what I use but I only have a W2 to deal with.
I use H&R Block online. Have for the past few years. Had five W2's last year to have to juggle. Filing electronically for federal and state I think I had to pay $65.
Until very recently, any schmuck with a little training course was able to prepare returns for H&RBlock & Jackson Hewit...not sure how much better it is now that the government got involved in their business.
That said, I have been doing our own for the last ~5 years, using TaxAct.

I pay $360 a year for my CA to close my books and do my personal taxes.
Myself by hand.
Years ago we had a more complicated return. Accountant charged $700.

What does H&R, et al, get you, that you couldn't figure on your own? :waiting:

If not for a side business (storage units), I would do them myself. I have had an accountant do them for me for the past 20 years.

Don't even bring this up. This is the first year where we both went Married on our W4. It ain't pretty. My house interest was a whopping $1500.00 and we don't have many deductions.
We got HAMMERED. We are both changing our deductions back to Single/0.
**** we got hammered.

3% Interest rate on our home and our mortgage is under 80K. That equals jackshit for deduction.

Same here. Just did our taxes, got a nice refund, but we had a ton of medical bills because of the baby.

Turbotax here too. They've gotten a lot better over the years. Plus, it remembers everything from the previous years.

Use to use turbo tax but since I work out of town a lot now wee have a CPA. Last year it ran us about $400. Well worth it
We use a business CPA from the firm Arthur Andersen as our accountant. He advised us to dump our stock in the early 2000s even though it had just doubled......It was very good advise.

Nothing, they are the joke of the accounting world.I grew up with one of the founders of H&R Block (Bloch). He opened the first H&R in Oklahoma City in the late 1950s and talked me into investing in the small business at that time. Little did he or I know how big it would grow... He passed away last year. :sadangel:

I have always done mine. I started out in public accounting and I am a retired CPA. I may take mine to a tax service just for the heck of it and also do it myself.

I would recommend that if you have someone do your taxes and it is not way complex to also do your own on Turbotax just for the heck of it.

I have used Taxslayer for about 5 years. This year I retired from Navy, got a new job before I retired and refinanced the house. Should be interesting.
So,I only have 2 W2's and retirement 1099R plus two mortgage forms.
Should be easy..unless the IRS has to redo everything and cause ours to have to be redone..
