NYC pulling down 'Don't Honk' signs

Posted: Tuesday, January 29, 2013, 6:02 AM

NEW YORK - New York City's "Don't Honk" signs are coming down, but it's still against the law to blow a car horn unnecessarily.

The city Department of Transportation says all the signs will be removed by the end of the year.

According to The New York Times, city officials say the decision is part of an effort to de-clutter the streets of signs that generally go ignored.

Unnecessary honking carries a $350 fine but is rarely enforced.

The DOT says complaints about honking have declined 63 percent since 2008.

But City Councilwoman Gale Brewer said in a letter to the DOT: "I can't tell you how many requests I get for `no honking' signs."

The signs were introduced during Mayor Ed Koch's administration.

Did the signs actually work? I wouldn't imagine.

Surprisingly, in some of the more residential (high rise) spots it did make a difference. Some of the fines were fairly steep $300+

Since they are not horns it should be legal.

So logically, if complaints are DOWN 60%.......you assume that the signs AREN'T working, and take them down? :slap:

Bummer, what happened?

My buddy has the smaller rack of horns (K3s IIRC) he's been wanting to mount
on his '03 2500 for several years now. I think all he is missing is the compressor.

Had mine mounted under the truck just under the drivers seat facing the drive shaft. Years of road salt has ate away at the internals of the chimes. I am rebuilding them now but one or two may need to be replaced.

I have a 20 gallon air tank along with an engine driven compressor mounted and ready for the fresh rebuild.

Rebuilt air chimes will reside mounted under my toolbox in the bed of the truck, safe from any corrosion from the salt.
