I've been communicating with a seller on eBay about his car for sale. I found someone to do the inspection, and I asked the seller for his contact info to set up the inspection. Here's his reply:

"Sorry I cannot be available for anyone to look car before end of auction. Car is great condition."

WTF? And the sad thing is that there are 10 bids on the car.

Maybe you could try to be less cynical and more trusting.

Doesn't sound like he needs any luck with 10 bids on the hook.

I see that he's just added a Buy It Now price of $28K. It'll never sell for anything near that.

A pretty nice looking 'barn find' midyear, was on there a few wks. ago. A member from CF went to look at it in person. The frame and birdcage was crumbling in his hands. I spent $1500 yrs. ago to fly to Wis. and look at a '67. Two other people told me it had no rust. It was eat up with it. Cost me $1500 from two people being dishonest...but, saved me countless $ and time if I had bought it on faith.

It's been said countless times before, but never, ever rely on what the seller says. The seller may even have good intentions and is honest, but often they don't know what to look for or they consider that aspect of the car unimportant.

Barn finds are a special animal. Lots of barns have dirt floors, and a car sitting on dirt is going to rust; the dirt doesn't have to get rained on because dirt will soak up moisture in the air. Rats, possums, and other animals can do a lot of damage, too. Just sitting there for years affects everything about the car, from the body to the electrical system and wiring , engine, transmission, frame and brakes. Usually the only good thing about them is low mileage.

You could always look at Bring a Trailer where there is a white TR-250 for sale for less than $20K. Yes, it is a project car, but these people seem to want to work with you.

As I've said to my NYC lawyer friends many times, just because we talk slow doesn't mean we think slow.
