it's called "Guess the Noise"

it's louder under the car.

I don't think it's header click. Wrist pin?

I thought it was a pulley at first, but near as I can tell (I used a piece of hose as a stethoscope)it's not coming from the front of the engine
I just can't catch a break with this car.

I hear a sqeaky pully..... Not sure if that's the noise you're refering too though.... :leaving:

The thrust bearing is shot. That is the crank gouging out the rear main bearing journal cap. Need to pull the motor and drop the crank.
JK, I have no idea.

That's an odd click...sounds like something just swinging around. Make sure everything under there is tightened?

yeah, that's the sound. I can't narrow down which pulley, and its louder from under the car, if I lay down with my head behind the wheel well.
the rest of the sounds have always been there.
muffler bearings....sounds just like the damn muffler bearings

you sure I'm not low on blinker fluid?

I am going to guess a loose belt since it seems to get better when you rev it.

Go to the airport and ask for prop wash. You can replace the blinker fluid with it and get more flashes per second when you signal.

I'd guess shot bearings on a pulley (power steering or tensioner)

Always hard to tell what a noise is, even in person.
If you can eliminate 1 pulley at a time, that may be your best bet.
Again, without being there, it's a shot in the dark.
The squeak does seem timed to the rpms, so I'd start with the pulleys.
On a side note, I've seen/heard defective pulleys on brand new equipment.
Scott
Its tinny metal rubbing against something. Its a rub, not a hit or bang so I'm guessing nothing really big.
Solid metal would have a deeper tone to it.
The sound can transfer through the metal and make it hard to find, just because you don't hear it up front doesn't always mean its not coming from up front.
Look for broken motor mounts or exhaust rubbing something.
Best I can do without being there in person.

Did you reuse the old water pump.... I've heard 'em sound like that when the bearings go.
Can you wiggle the fan's shaft?

SHUT THE ENGINE OFF AND LET THE DAMN MOUSE OUT!
Montehall

so I pulled my belt off and ran the car, noise is the same. so the only thing turning was the crank pulley, which is not touching the oil pan, I checked that by putting my hand behind it.
Using a length of hose as a stethoscope, I put it around the engine, it was noticeable in the drivers side valve cover, so I pulled that, then moved the hose around there as well, and it was extremely loud when I put the hose down the breather holes on the head.
Motor mounts physically looked OK.

Is it isolated to the area of a specific cylinder?
I still say wrist pin.

Really funky... the noise does NOT sound like any part of the internal/rotating assembly to me.
Again, recorded audio is no way to diagnose what is hard to do in person.
Sure hope it is a simple issue.

My Father in Law recommended I saturate the motor mounts in WD40 and if the noise goes away, then that's what it is.
Montehall
01-23-2013, 6:36pm
So I sprayed the mounts with WD40, and ran the car, still squeaking.
I jacked it up and crawled underneath and as near as I can tell, it's coming from right around the clutch.

it takes it a while to get going, but for some reason (of course) the squeak wasn't that loud.
but you can hear an exhaust leak...

I swear it sounds like a bracket that's just not cinched down tight enough, and something is sliding back and fourth in/on/over/through it.
Montehall
01-23-2013, 7:54pm
could a loose exhaust flange cause it?
i.e. Kingpin's thought?
I have the exhaust leak... but I couldn't see either side sliding around.

Could be. Look for movement. You might need to get it over a pit so you can get a better look/listen. Is it definitely coming from the bottom rear?

Did you use the old header gaskets? If one of them is compromised, it could be the culprit.

I replaced the header gaskets when I re-did the heads last summer. They are new.
Check your dust cover for the flywheel, it sounds like it is hitting the flywheel.

So I took and tightened the exhaust flanges and found the passenger side was pretty loose.
that eliminated the exhaust leak. A co-worker stopped by and took a listen and we both noticed some pretty severe valve rattle, and he confirmed the squeaking is coming from the flywheel area. The hose stethoscope revealed that this noise only occurs at the bottom of that area.
I then tackled valve rattle. When I removed my valve cover (passenger side) I found both rockers on the #6 cylinder were really loose, so I turned the engine and tightened them. Apparently, I went too far and now the valves aren't closing all the way, and my vacuum gauge is going ape-shit.
so on top of all that is already happening, I'm also going to have to zero lash all the valves again.
still don't know what the squeak is. I looked at my bell housing, but it doesn't appear to be a two-piece so I can't remove the lower half. There is a hole cut out in the bottom and one in the side for the clutch fork.
the flywheel and clutch are both rusty-brown, with no shiny spots I can see. but also dry, so at least my rear seal looks good. I can however, move the clutch fork towards the slave by hand, and the slave doesn't push it back out. Guess my bleeder valve needs to be re tightened.
