Gave one to the wife for Christmas.
If you haven't already, sign up for Amazon Prime.
We enjoyed watching several movies, including Christmas Vacation.
Also, buy a (micro-to-standard) HDMI cable to hook it up to the TV.
We also watch the AP movies via xbox.
She's downloaded Spider Solitaire and several other games. Quite a
few are free.

One good thing about the Fire is that you can root it and make it do all sorts of nifty things it was never designed for. It's extremely versatile in that manner and the President of the last company I worked for swore by it. It was really interesting what he did with his KF, to say the least.
