nikon shooters, i need help

i am having one hell of a time grasping something in the Nikon menu. you have shooting menu and custom setting banks. 4 of each.

I don't really understand the relationship between the two, if there is one. anyone esplain to a 3 year old so i can understand it, and have any resources for examples of how to use them?

I'm a Canon shooter, but...sounds like the 'custom setting banks' are for you to manipulate and save the default settings to your liking ? If you want more/less contrast than the default, more/less saturation, etc...? You might can also set them up for specific shooting situations - sports for one bank, indoor lighting for one, landscape, etc...then just choose that mode, instead of changing them all the time.
