View Full Version : {Gun-nuts} Cheaper than dirt... and full of ****

I was wandering around the interwebs today and decided to check out cheaper than dirt to see what ammo insanity was going on. What I saw was absolutely beyond belief.

Federal 5.56x45mm NATO Ammunition with 62 Grain SS109 Penetrator Green Tip, 3025 fps, 300 Round Box XM855
Our Low Price: $399.79

.223 Remington Federal American Eagle FMJ 55 Grain 1000 Round Loose Bulk Pack 3240 fps
Our Low Price: $999.97

$1 a round for American Eagle .223?? $1.33 for Federal 5.56??

Companies are still making ammo. LOTS of it... which means that after this rush dies down, even if there is some sort of dumbshit attempt at legislation, ammo will become easily available again.

You would have to be a complete moron to pay a 400% markup on ammo. The sad part is, there seem to be a whole lot of people doing just that.

just reloaded some 44mag ammo, the box of bullets i was using, which i've had for quite some time, was marked at $8.60/100 for 200gr 44mag bullets. i checked Hornady last night, same box now goes for about $31. i'm thankful i have several more boxes like that still to go.

I won't deal with CTD anymore, ever. When all that crap happened last month they are one of two (Dick's being the other) that stopped selling firearms in a knee-jerk reaction.

Well then it seems like a 400%+ price gouge would be right on par for them.

I've never bought anything from them in the past, always been able to find it cheaper. Doesn't look like I will be in the future either.

I hear that Uncle Sam has been buying TONS of ammo for over a year now.
I wonder why?
That, and high commodity prices, is what is driving the prices up.
The Connecticut shooting obviously created a buying frenzy, on top of Uncle Sugar's ravenous demand for ammo, and is taking prices to a whole new level.

What could he really do? Revoke all of our permits?
He's messin' with the constitution. I'm afraid that the mobilization effort by us voters will overwhelm him.

Did you see their PMag Prices? The same time they halted sales of firearms, they jacked the price on their pmags up. I never will do business with them again, Brownells and Midway have been WAY too good to work with.

I've been buying from them each week. Their prices have crept up...but I'm talking a dollar or two on a 20 round box of 45ACP for instance. Not this 2-3 times price hike that others have been doing. I'll continue doing this until I don't have any room to store the ammo.

I got a catalog from them yesterday, and the prices were about the same for 9mm, and .38 special. Then I went on line to get some, and everything that I would buy was out of stock.
I wouldn't say that I'd never buy stuff there. If the price is right, I'll buy it, over somewhere where it costs more. I'm not vendor specific, as I'll shop for the best price, no matter who is selling it.

The long & short of it is;

1) He proposes no internet ammo sales..:wtf::toetap: That's BS. Luckily I live near Pa.
2) Ban mags over 10 rounds...Whipee
3) You must pass a background check and be deemed mentally sane before you can purchase a firearm... Like we don't already:rofl:
The best part is NO MENTION OF ANY NEW TAXES! Unbelievable.
He obviously caved to massive pressure, as these are pretty hollow proposals. He is a gun owner himself, come to find out......:seasix:

So is Eric Holder. He wants to brainwash our youth (his words) to think of gun ownership as shameful and to be shunned "like smokers are." These guys are dangerous.

The DARE program seems to be working pretty well to eliminate alcohol, tobacco, and drugs from our youth. Not completely though, as you still have a lot of kids who partake. Not like when we were young though.
It will be a long process, going forward.... As long as we fund wars, I really can't see the US stopping it's citizens from owning guns.... It'll be really difficult to change the constitution...
Stopping ammo sales, and heavy taxation, on the other hand are a different story. That's where the real fight will be imo.

Hording and panic buying continues- Somebody texted me (anonymously) on my work phone asking me if I had any rifles to sell. That bad out there huh? I don't even own an AR, but they must have thought I did. probably somebody from my work who got my phone number off of the company directory.

I have the phone number- It was a text from somebody not in my directory. I think they were too ashamed to tell me who it was- that's how it is in Cali- gun people have to stay under the radar.

Midsouth shooter supply where I often buy doesn't show huge price increases. Obviously they have nothing in stock because of it though. I'm not too concerned about it, have a 20 year supply and that's probably going to exceed my shelf life.

Don't take this the wrong way but it sounds like you guys are going to have to learn to not waste bullets. My dad drilled this into me when I was young. Ammo might not have cost a paycheck back in those days but it still cost money and he was the one paying for it. It's simple enough, don't shoot unless something needs to die (you do hunt?).

Dad never used firing ranges. I do go to the range but ammo gets "wasted" only to sight in scopes, test new handloads, train new shooters, and familiarize myself with new weapons. This doesn't require thousands of rounds, only hundreds... Don't tell my dad, he turns 80 this weekend doesn't need the strain

Hey Douglas, if I send you some brass and some $$, can you reload my .44?
I only have a lever gun in that caliber and don't really shoot it enough to justify another reloading set up for those few rounds.

:D

See... the problem with that is that I shoot for fun, not just to hunt or defend myself. I'm not rich but "fun" ammo and guns I want (but don't really need) is something that I make room for in my budget and will continue to do so.

I have already seen 5.56 ammo starting to pop up again in the $.50/rd range. AIM Surplus just had a run of Federal M855 for $.44/rd, 55gr PMC X-Tac for $.39/rd, and 62gr X-Tac for $.41/rd. It is already dying off a bit even on gunbroker. Cases that were going for $1.50+/rd are now going for $.80, if they sell at all. Even the local shop had bulk Federal 62gr for $.75/rd. Those prices are still way high and it is still hard to find but it will come back to Earth. It has definitely already started to do so. When it does, I will restock what I have gone through over this bit of insanity and get ready for the next time libf*cks try to take them away.

Getting through inflationary times like this is exactly why I stockpile.

I know a dude that works at Remington in Arkansas and he said they doubled their capacity over the last year with additional investment going on currently. I used to work at Lake City and they are putting out as much as they ever have. You can almost bet that more ammo is being made now then ever before. Especially 5.56, 9mm and other popular rounds. Ever since barry first got elected, ammo manufactures have been running full tilt. There is either a lot of shooting or a lot of hoarding. All I know is shooting is no longer a cheep hobby like it used to be.

Homeland Security and FEMA have orders for BILLIONS of bullets over the past few years... 9mm & .40 cal being the main purchases.

Cheaper than Dirt used to be properly named... Today, not so much.

Even my beloved lake City M2 Ball is hard to find. I just helped a guy out and he asked if I wanted to be paid in cash or ammo. I took the ammo.

Where did you even find LC M2 for a reasonable price??

I'm using the Greek HXP from the CMP. Seems to be great ammo... I'm just partial to US production on principle.

I do have this, but I don't plan on opening it anytime soon.

Do you have somewhere you have been able to find LC lately?
