Grandma’s Body Found In Storage Unit After 17 Years

Employees at the U-Stor Self Storage in Clearwater, Florida received a gruesome surprise on Thursday when they discovered the corpse of a woman whose body had been stored within a unit in the storage center for the past 17 years.

Kevin McKeon, the manager at the self-storage facility made the shocking discovery on Thursday after a customer revealed that her family had held their grandmother’s corpse in a rented unit since 1995. McKeon says that he became aware of the situation after he called a tenant earlier this week to inform her that she was behind on payments. McKeon informed the renter that the contents of the unit would soon be auctioned off, according to the Tampa Bay Times.

When McKeon got in touch with the renter, he says she gave him a bit of bizarre news. The renter, the woman’s granddaughter, informed McKeon that he could not dispose of the possessions inside the unit, because one of the possessions was the corpse of her grandmother.

“She called and said, ‘My mother told me on her death bed that Grandma is in the storage unit. You can’t sell our stuff,’” Joelle Castelli, a Clearwater police spokeswoman, told the Tampa Tribune.

Because of the bizarre nature of the conversation, McKeon says he did not even check the unit until Thursday because he was skeptical about the claims. He was alarmed to find a long, blue casket within the unit, containing the corpse of the grandmother, and he immediately contacted the Clearwater Police Department.

Officials have since located the death certificate for the grandmother, who died in 1995, according to the Orlando Sentinel, and was reportedly properly prepared for burial, according to MSNBC.

So far, no charges have been filed.

In an update to the original story, Huffington Post was able to obtain the following information regarding the case.

“Authorities with the Clearwater Police Department have identified the grandmother as Ann Bunch, born Jan. 1, 1900, as well as the daughter and granddaughter, Bobbie Barnett Hancock born Dec. 25, 1929 and Rebecca Ann Fancher born May 27, 1957, respectively. Police are still investigating and do not anticipate charging Fancher with any crime.”

I wonder if they caught up the rent so she can stay there? :island14:

Resting in peace is expensive.

17 years of storage rent would have probably purchased an actual burial plot somewhere. Just sayin'.

I'm guessing that it was a 10'X10 maybe, which go for about $100 a month.

Over 17 years, that's $20,400.
That would've bought her a freakin' crypt!

Well, I guess in a way it did.

Not familiar with the burial laws/health code laws in all states( I come from a funeral director family), but would think that anyone that knew that body was in a storage facility was in deep dodo!

Reading the post suggest the body was well embalmed, but there is still a good chance of biological hazards present!

You just know this came about as a result of a family argument.

Grandma refuses to get rid of any of her junk when she moves into the rest home. As a result, the family is forced to foot the bill for a storage unit. The family figures, if Grandma is so attached to her s**t, she can go in storage, too.

Happened in FLA.

Jesus, you just can't set the bar low enough down here.

I again, would like to say that it may be a good idea to reduce our electoral college votes to zero or possibly negative.

Totally unrelated, but I went from a large storage room to a smaller one and later wanted my original unit back. The Public Storage manager said I could not have it back because they had to do major clean up in the unit. Someone was LIVING in it !!

They had a battery radio, candles, a sleeping bag and... a bucket since there is no bathroom. :puke:

Two thoughts:

1) You are bordering on homelessness. Your choices are rent a storage shed and live in it with some posessions you managed to save, or, just lose every possession you own and go live under a bridge. Given the choice, I'd rent the storage locker for $ 100/month while I tried to get my life together.

2) How hard is it to clean a storage locker? Concrete floors and sheet metal walls? Haul the **** to the dumpster, then spend 30 minutes with a pressure washer. If you are picky, mop the place with bleach. That couldn't take more than a few hours, max.

Third floor indoor. Pressure washer would have wrecked everything an adjoining units. Yeah , I thought it was lame, but this place was not known for customer service. I moved my crap into the garage.

PAYING to store ANYTHING is just flat stupid, the payment FAR surpass the value of any of the shit in them lockers.....

by FAR......unless maybe for 3 months or something to do with a engine swap/hotrod project, I could see THAT maybe.....only of the garage is way to small....

If you consider the temperature swings in the garage (mine anyway) you quickly understand why climate controlled storage is necessary. I have collectibles like model cars, Hot Wheels, old toys and games, and comic books that are not going to take to garage storage well. Houses in Houston have no basements otherwise there wouldn't be a market for storage.

In addition, seasonal stuff is simply in the way during the rest of the year. All our Christmas stuff is kept in storage.

The option of adding on to the house would far exceed the expense of a storage spot.
