I have a serious question for the all knowing OT.

Yamma and I have been thinking about selling the house and moving to somewhere new. Neither of us are particularly tied to one area or another, but do like TN and GA and prefer to stay in this area, preferably more towards the mountains. If we were to do this, we would both have to make some changes as far as our lifestyle go. I would have to make a major career change and would be ok with that.

My question to you: If you could do a career change - and not necessarily concerned about the money - what job would you want to do that makes enough to "cover the bills" and still have insurance benefits? I really do not want to have to go back to school to learn anything new, I just want a good 9-5 job with no more on-call or after hours support.

I've always said I want to live on the water somewhere. I'm scared to live by the ocean, so maybe Lake Norman in N. Carolina. I think the wife and I have said N. Carolina to Georgia-no further West than Nashville.
I plan on teaching Thermal Imaging so I just need to be near an airport. Wife will need to be near a major city tho.

:cert: That would be some serious fun. I've been looking at some houses online up in the North Georgia Mountains, into Southern N. Carolina. My Grandparents are up on the lake in Blairsville, and I basically grew up spending weekends in the summer up there. It's my little slice of heaven. I know that I would like a cabin, and it would be nice to have a little land....then again the water would be nice.....so would a mountain view......:D

I worked 15 yrs. in IT. I hated being on-call. I really do understand how you feel about it. I've dabbled in real estate and other jobs since then. I was also a butcher for a year or so, when I got out of H.S. The smell was terrible. I couldn't eat meat for 2 mos. I didn't like it at all. But, one of the other guys is still doing it at a very small shop in town...going on 30 yrs. In downtown Cartersville, GA. there is an old timey butcher shop. That is all they do. You walk in and see the glass display coolers, etc...they cut the meat to your order. I haven't seen another place like that anywhere...maybe....the larger cities ? Could be a biz. type opportunity...a niche thing. We have a couple of local butcher shops...but, they don't have that type atmosphere as the one n C'ville. Old bldg. glass coolers, etc...atmosphere.

My dream job...to own a biz. near Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge. Too late for me now...but, another dream job would be a National Park Ranger.

I don't know of any butcher shops up in the mountains......then again, I don't get up there near as often as I used to. No telling what's up there now.

I wouldn't mind having a home on a little bit of land....nothing too crazy, but a couple of nicer barns maybe. A lot of people like having mountain weddings, I wouldn't think it too hard to set up a small venue. Cater the food, have a nice little setting for it, and I'd be able to photograph it.

Either that, or get a bunch of old campers to fix up and rent out on weekends! (not the best money maker, but I bet it would be fun) :D

Not sure of the regulations and rules in your area but you could purchase a liquor store, beer, wine and hard liquor as a base business and offer catering for BBQ as a side. It is a good base business since people drink regardless of the economy. Lots of side jobs can be run from it, even sell smoked meats, etc.

Think of what you want to do job wise, then get a part-time job in the profession. That way you can "try it out" and get a feel if it is something you would like to do full time and find out what kind of future it holds without walking away from the security you currently have. If you have the opportunity to change careers by choice,
and you have a hobby or interest that you really enjoy,
find a way to make that your job.
It won't seem like work and the day will go by fast.

I haven't gotten a cert since my Windows Server 2000 MCSA. :funny:

It doesn't do me any good anymore to have a cert, especially on a resume.

..I have to get 2 now myself...New government contract rules.

Buy property for cheap.

BBQ shack. Based on the pictures I have seen on here of some of your creations, you would do well. Simple menu, good prices, fun atmosphere, and you will stay busy.

I can see him setting up over in town here on just weekends for dinner only 2 days a week and getting by pretty well.

Say... just open from 5 till 10 and close up for the week. :island14:

And as you say... from what I have seen, I would be a customer for sure! :yesnod: :seasix:

I thought this too.

If you have the opportunity to change careers by choice,
and you have a hobby or interest that you really enjoy,
find a way to make that your job.
It won't seem like work and the day will go by fast.

With your IT background, you could work from home, whenever you want,
as much as you want and get paid by the task. (not a scam).

Check out Amazon Mechanical Turk. (https://www.mturk.com/mturk/welcome)
Pick the HITs you want to work on.

I know a local guy that does pretty well on odesk.com, at only 20 years old he makes twice more in an hour, than most Filipinos make here in a day. :yesnod:

If you guys want to check out some of the areas where our cabin is (Ellijay), let me know, you can stay there, we could meet you just about anytime.

Coosawattee River Resort in Ellijay, Georgia (http://coosawattee.net/)

I love Ellijay - Used to drive through there every weekend on our way up to the lake house - once you get away from the chaos of the apple orchards on 53, it's not too bad. :D

.....so.....horse boarding. Say, if we find a house with a sizable barn, we could rent out that space?

Now that's not a bad idea....the places that are only open a couple days a week always seem to stay in business, and when open, are always packed. Convenience to the lake in the summer, and nice 'take out' picnics in the summer could be a popular thing. :seasix:

This lady must have had capital to buy this goat farm but I think she is doing good internet sales. Not too far south of where you are now.

Goat Cheese by Belle Chevre | Goat Cheese Breakfast Spreads | Goat Cheese Recipes and Cooking | Gourmet Gifts (http://www.bellechevre.com/index.php)

She is having INCREDIBLE sales. Not only Internet, but a LOT of Huntsville stores carry Belle Chevre. She was also featured on the Today show for holiday ideas. We gave 3 or 4 baskets as gifts this year.

The place is about 20 minutes from our house. :) So now we have Belle Chevre, Jack Daniels, and a few local brew places for tours (and some samples on occasion!) :)

We also have a local BBQ joint that is only open 11-2 (or when the meat runs out for the day) and serves the local workers. ALWAYS packed. Guy's is from Texas and does the Texas style BBQ vs the Memphis or Carolina style BBQ's...

So it is my favorite place!

I have been looking around some today - one thing I need to research is the transfer of vehicles from TN to GA and if I have to pay taxes on them again.

I seem to remember that GA has some ass-backward laws about auto registrations and paying taxes on them annually in addition to a state income tax. :sadangel:

I would be willing to run a bbq shack a couple days a week. Maybe even throw in a boiled peanut stand out front to get people out of their car and smell the Q :seasix:

FYI - this is not that we are unhappy about anything in our lives. We both have started to feel that there is more to life than working ourselves to death and not able to find the time to actually relax and enjoy the beauty of life around us.

We have both been blessed with awesome jobs, it is just that we both feel that there is more out there. We will continue to pray and hopefully get the guidance that we need to lead us in the right direction. I have faith it will happen, it is the patience part that I am terrible at. (ask yamma)

After reading through this, here's my take Rob.

You don't need a lifestyle change. You need a job change. You need to loose the on call bullshit and extra hours and get a job with a company that values you as an employee and has a good work culture. Lots of companies out there now value their employees and want you to have a good work/home balance. You may think this might be easy for the guy who posted about working half a day today, but at the same time i also spent the last two days driving and visiting customers and potentials in Charlotte and Raliegh (750 miles in two days). My boss realizes there is give and take, i gave earlier in the week and i'm taking a half day today. :D

Now to do this it may require you to move away from TN as their are probably limited employment opportunities there due to the size of the surrounding cities and the limited number (as well as lack of) opportunities there in your field of employment. Are you two open to doing that?

Another thing that i think is worth mentioning is this. If you like the mountains and want to spend more time there, come up with a game plan for a cabin. This might require you to cut back on and liquidate the toys like all the scooters, camper, competition BBQ rig, etc so you can put that money toward a down payment on a small mountain cabin so you can spend holidays, weekends, and vacations there.

Set goals and prioritize. Best of luck to you two. I was in a similar sitiuation a couple years ago when i liquidated everything down to what was absolutely neccesary so that i had working capital for investing in real estate, and i came out on top in less than two years.

Be sure to play devils advocate and think of the pro's and con's of what ever you decide.

Dixie, my wife and I came to that revelation too after both of our kids moved out of the house. We've gotten into a lot of hobbies (scuba, sailing, hiking, offroading, cycling, running, camping, etc), and have really gotten to take the time to do those together.

I've altered my work schedule to let me come in earlier, so I can get home earlier and spend time doing those things with my wife. Perhaps in the interim, you can alter your schedule and make things easier so you CAN spend more time doing the 'more than this' part of your life.

We love the Huntsville area, and we're not far from the mountains. We have lots of camping and hiking available within an hour or so and we're only 2 hrs from Chattanooga. If you ever want to come down this way and check out the area, let me know. We'd love to take you guys hiking. Or we could hit up a few campgrounds around the lakes here.

Good point you brought up. Have you talked to you employer about your level of frustration to see if they are willing to accommodate you in anyway with your long hours and being on call? If they value you, they may be willing work something out.

Maybe play the "i'm recently married and don't get to spend any time with my wife and she's starting to give me shit" card. If your boss is a married guy he'll give you a week off on the spot.. :D

A big reason for wanting to move to a place with land is to have room for said toys. :seasix:

Our house is packed full, while we are in a good neighborhood, we would certainly not miss anyone in it (well, just the neighbor across the street). Definitely would not miss the drama or crazy cat lady next door.

Interesting discussion.

First thing is your income will more than likely be drastically cut whether you start a business or take a job doing something you like. Most people who make good money are either self employed or work a ton of hours. ( on call included).

Second. Any thoughts of being self employed and working less is crazy. If you own your own business it consumes you, even more so than a job. So everyone saying to get a restaurant or food truck is crazy. Why ruin a nice hobby that you love? And having to do it every day would do just that.

Thirdly. Everyone wants to work from home and do / sell something on the internet. If someone has a fresh idea, feel free to tighten me up with the info.:shots:

Fourth. Health insurance. I pay $1200.00 a month and it goes up daily it seems. Not sure any mom and pop gig is going to provide any assistance.

That being said, I would find a computer job, home based, with maybe a 40 hour work schedule, but with a time frame that if you want to work the 40, you could do it in 2 days. ( or something like that). My brother just got a gig like that making good dough.

That being said. Twenty five years ago I wasn't happy with my job. No kids, not married and I quit and took a chance. Glad I did, never look back, and didn't want to be 60 years old and say "what if".

Good luck!

I guess in theory you could be self employed and work less. Not sure the income would substantiate any life style of substance though.

Plus, to me being self employed means the sky is the limit. The harder you work, the more you make. I know this regime in Govt doesnt believe that, but that's another story.

I am actually working today. I have a guaranteed $600.00 on two jobs that will take 4 hours, with another one worth $450.00 and 4 more hours. That one is a maybe, as it might not be there.

Of course being self employed and making good money is a big incentive.

Here is another problem. Most businesses revolve around people, unless they are internet based.

The farther you move out from population, the less customers you have unless you want a nice compute.
