View Full Version : Is the collector car market back?

According to Hagerty (one of the leading collector car insurance companies) it is:
"From the expensive to the entry-level, the collector car market is back. A large percentage of the makes and models followed by Hagerty Valuation Tools are trading at or above their late 2007 peak levels. Even the muscle car market (which was the hardest hit) is looking strong again in ways that look far more rational than in 2007.
But the biggest story of 2012 is likely the degree of strength and interest in the bottom of the market. Cars that seemed like they’d be cheap forever simply aren’t anymore, as anyone who has been in the market for a nice second-generation Corvair or a 5.0-liter Fox body Mustang convertible can attest. The sub-$5,000 cars have simply disappeared."

As soon as I can get six figures for my Challenger, it's going to auction. I MIGHT test the waters at Mecum Dallas next fall (I always say that, then I drive the car and go back on it :D ). Right now it's valued in the high five's.
Hopefully it will be stong when I put my '73 C3 Vert up for sale :D
Details? I have had 5 73's, the right L82 4-speed Vert might convince me to liquidate the Z16.

Nope. Not anywhere near 2006/2007 levels. I bought a muscle car a few mos. ago, partying like it was 1999
Companies involved in the "hobby" would like you to believe it's back, but it isn't. A lot of the early-mod 2000's money was funny money, fueled by the artificial housing bubble.
Meh. Let me know when my c-4 is worth something. Until then,

I REALLY trust Keith Martin's auction database. The data is compiled from the 'big event' and online auctions.

It's a nice survivor, never been restored, just freshened up.
I'm the third owner the last 6 years.
Only negative is that the original owner got tired of the metallic yellow paint and had it repainted bright red.

Maybe near term - give it 10 years and watch it tank - not too many guys in the 40 and under crowd that are into muscle / classic cars ... walk around at Barrett Jackson , Mecum etc it's all of us "older guys" there ...
My brother (46) and his friends are samples - NONE of them are into cars - me (59) and my friends are all of that generation into cars ...

I don't know if we'll ever see 2007 prices again, but I think we have a ways to go before we can claim that the market is back. Since they're toys and not investments, people won't spend their money on them unless they're feeling flush. I think it's still a buyer's market right now.

That's not a negative. :Jeff '79:

When I had my midyear(s). I would go to a cruise night almost every Sat. of the month Mar-Nov. The few young people that would show up were always looking at the late model cars. A good friend couldn't even bribe his son or daughter into coming out for any amount of time. ANY car to them was just a means of transportation.
Here is a recent online poll 'How old are you' to C1/C2 owners.

You did good. A bronze LT-1 Vert is not very common.

I have posted about my friend Mike's experience with just this stuff, from almost 25 years ago, he had a really super V8 Ford rumble seat convertible, car was sweet, needed some polish and perfection, including engine resto work and so when he got done he collected a pile of V8 club resto awards....
so after letting it set under a cloud of dust in his garage for some years, he finally sells it for maybe 15 grand, having bought it for 13 grand.....
reason is, all the guys who lusted after one NEW, were out of the market, and museums were full....
NOW, as was lending an occasional hand , I would comment he would be better off making a hotrod out of it, updating everything in site.....
as a hotrod he could have exorcized his engineering background/degree and had more fun with the creative side working.....and sold the results for about 50 grand instead of 15......
I have a suspicion that is what is going to happen to our end of the car hobby also....no matter what we old phardts either have one by now, or are not in the market, and we are going to be fading faster and faster, ....

With the repaint / color change, it's hardly a "survivor" at this point :skia:
