yep; had it chopped off by 20 inches. This fireplace mantel (hearth :banghead: ) was already there when we bought this house. There's a flue in the ceiling. We had a wood burning free-standing fireplace there; but eventually replaced it with a propane ceramic log version.

There was no need anymore for a large area mantel (to catch falling logs  ). And, this mantel always "jutted out" into the center of the room too far. Paid a mason to do the work; he reused the existing brick. We gained 20" of width in that part of the room.

http://www.tim-yvonne.com/temp2/mantel4.JPG

Was able to then relocate the fireplace back a little bit.

The new mortar is already starting to change colors (getting closer to the older existing mortar); still have dust re-appearing on the surface... that will eventually stop as well.

Now, it's time for new carpet !

Before the freestanding fireplace looked dwarfed and too small for the brick mantel. Now it looks proportional. :seasix: Nice mod!

that freestanding unit is rated for mobile home use; in that it's double walled and can be placed within inches of a wall. The only heat exits out of the golden vents in front (there's a blower inside). The candles sitting on top do not melt :nonod:

Granted, that brick area does warm-up slightly when the fireplace is running; but not by very much. It's quite surpising how the vast majority of heat gets pushed into the center of the room (and to the rest of the house).

Um, you reduced the size of the "hearth". The "mantel" is the white wood thing with all the pictures on it.

Other than that, your mason did a fine job!

there is a flue:

http://www.tim-yvonne.com/temp2/flue.JPG

it's one of those round metal double-walled thingy's. I have it blocked off; and plan on boxing over it - painting the enclosure the color of the ceiling.

You think I'd remove it all together; but those darned flues are expensive. I'll leave it for the next owner.

there is a flue:

http://www.tim-yvonne.com/temp2/flue.JPG

I understand that, but I'm just trying to understand the idea of a completely open fireplace. Unless that flue moves air at the same level of a large fan used to cool a warehouse, there's going to be some soot all around it, on the pictures, etc, no?

I can't say I understand the question. There was only ever free-standing types of fireplaces there - with connected flues. When we had the woodburning one there; ran it a lot and never had the problem you are describing. It did have a door though... with large glass. The firebox was never "open" to the room, except to put in wood.

example:
http://furniture.trendzona.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/Cast-iron-freestanding-fireplace-for-living-room.jpg

Our newer ceramic log propane fireplace burns completely clean; no flue - fumes - or soot. The firebox is completelty open to the room.

I'm betting that when it was built there was a real wood-burning stove and the area the brick extended to was required by fire codes. (I'm assuming it's now a gas-burning stove?)

as you can see, the riser was solid concrete. The mason about schit when he discovered it - as it was going to be a lot of work to remove the unwanted portion..

The large qty of holes drilled - Yvonne and I did that after the worker left. We felt badly for him upon this discovery - and tried to help him a little.
