From 2 GB to 4 GB, will the machine run faster?
What is the purpose of increasing memory?
I could do it for $28.00......Memory Finder at TigerDirect.com (http://www.tigerdirect.com/sectors/campaigns/memory-finder.asp?cm_re=Memory-_-Spot%2020-_-MemoryFinder#Wx31Ij00L00AAD)

:iagree: But don't forget to overclock the outlet first.

Jeff, there is more to "speed" than ram.
What or where is the delay? Browsing slowly, processing media, gaming?

99% of the time it is Microso..... I mean maintenance related issues.
When is the last time you did a fresh system load?

Most of the time, you won't notice just an increase in ram. If performance is a problem, then you'll do far better increasing processor/bus speed.

YouTube videos will stop for like 10-15 seconds, and then continue. I don't do gaming, so I don't know about that. Generally my computer is pretty fast.
What is a fresh system load? I defrag, and all of that stuff every month or so.

btw, Doug is on fire tonight....

There's your problem right there. Vista home premium.

My MacPro is running 18 gigs of ram. Plus, some insane amount of VRAM (don't remember and too lazy to go look) but it depends on your use. I edit 1080p video and run effects in real time ( more or less) and this means RAM. Motion graphics are rendered with the video card so VRAM is needed.

on you machine you have limited bus speeds. This slows things down regardless of RAM.

But vista is a pig that keeps growing and using more resources. Google "clean install"

My dad's laptop was running SLOW, but it had Vista, 1 gb of ram, and was the factory load.

I bought Win 7 64 bit (it was compatible with his processor), upgraded to 4 GB RAM, and wiped his machine after saving his data. Factory loads have a LOT of bloatware that just waste space and RAM.

I figure I got performance gains by:
- getting rid of bloatware/reformatting
- taking advantage of the 64 bit architecture his laptop has (YMMV)
- Going from Vista to Win 7
- adding RAM (64 bit wants 4 gb RAM anyway)

Adding RAM may make a huge or slight difference. A lot will depend on how much Windows is going to the HD for swap space. If you have a slow HD and it is using swap space a lot, yes it will be slow and more ram will help significantly. If you have a faster HD or your machine isn't doing a lot of HD activity while in use, then it won't make as big of a difference, but it should bump it up a bit.

Based on your descriptions, it sounds like something is eating your RAM/processor time. Perhaps spy/adware, a virus, bloatware from the factory. If you add the RAM, also take the time to uninstall apps, especially the free crap that came with the machine. Also be sure your virus defs are up to date and run a full scan.

I just installed 2GB on my daughter's netbook. It had 1GB, and the machine was totally clean... There was a noticeable speed difference...
I am limited by a 32 Bit OS, so this is the cheapest upgrade that I can do, w/o just going out and buying a new desktop. Like I said, the machine works just fine. I do have a ton of pictures in the memory though, and a lot of documents etc.
I will go through and eliminate all of the bloatware, like you suggest...Thanks ! :seasix:

When you add RAM to an existing system, especially if it is a 32-bit system, about all you can expect is smoother overall operation. Browsers will open up a little snappier, you can have more tabs open before shit starts bogging down, more applications running without insanely long pauses when swapping focus, stuff like that. And yes, videos will benefit too.
