Tradition continues with donation of valuable Krugerrand coin to Salvation Army Red Kettle

TULSA - For more than a decade the Salvation Army has been the recipient of a secret, valuable donation via the red kettle campaign. Once again volunteers have found a gold South African Krugerrand coin.

The coin, worth more than $1,700, was wrapped in a $2 bill and dropped into a red kettle Saturday, Dec. 15, continuing the tradition of anonymous donations.

"This has been an amazing tradition for quite some time," said Major James Taylor, Tulsa area commander.

With the exception of 2010, a Krugerrand has been dropped in a red kettle for 15 years.

"We certainly don't count on it but it is a wonderful blessing when it happens," said Taylor.

This year, the donation came on a day where all donations were matched by Tulsa Gold and Silver up to $10,000.

"We've been a part of this community for over 30 years," said Mike Anderson, of Tulsa Gold and Silver. "We are proud to partner with the Salvation Army in making this a better Christmas for those in need."

The local business has offered an additional match of up to $15,000 for donations made Saturday, Dec. 22.

The red kettle goal this year is $650,000. The money donated to the kettles goes to provide food, clothing and help with emergency needs for the less fortunate in the community, said Taylor.

"We are especially thankful for the gold coin and matching grant in light of our challenge with the unusually large number of 'forgotten angels'," said Taylor, explaining that "forgotten angels" are angels adopted from the Angel Trees but gifts for them were never returned.

This year the Salvation Army is tending to 700 forgotten angels.

To give to the Salvation Army, donations may be made online at The Salvation Army International - The Salvation Army International (http://www.salvationarmy.org) , by calling (918) 587-7801 or by texting JOY to 85944 to make a one-time $10 gift that will be billed to your cellphone account.

Is it legal in the US now to possess a Krugerrand?

Yup. They stopped making them in 60's, but started again in the 70's. They are produced in tiny numbers.

From what I understand, the Krugerrand couldn't be imported or traded in the US as part of the sanctions against ZA, but I haven't been able to determine if that was changed after ZA ended Apartheid.

The Krugerrand is a "bullion coin", in that it doesn't have a denominational value minted into it, and it's value is purely based upon the value of the 1oz of gold it contains. Americans were not allowed to possess gold bullion until 1974, but the Krugerrand may have been an exception, because it is legal tender in ZA.

Edit: It appears the Krugerrand is legal now, with the release of sanctions on ZA in 1994.

Interesting :seasix:
I have a ring my Dad gave me that was made by mounting the coin into the top.

If it fits on a ring as a whole coin, it isn't a Krugerrand. They're like an inch and a half diameter...

Indeed... unless your taste in jewelry tends towards the Liberace-esque... :D

Edit: Your pics didn't show up the first time I loaded the thread, but I can see them now. That is indeed a miniature Krugerrand, probably 22 karat gold.

Nice ring for a coin collector you've got there. :seasix:
