Here's what I find.
When you're young and watching porn on the net you will click on just about anything. Industrial type AV is needed.
When you get older you have a pretty good idea what you should or shouldn't click on unless you're Mr. Vette so you can dumb down the AV and not need anything so aggressive.
I ran without AV for over a year and didn't have one issue.
I only put it on my computer since I use it for work now.
Just my opinion.

I'm using Avast (free) on all the workstations. It's worked well.
Over time, it seems to have become a little more resource intensive though.
On the server, I use AVG file server edition (not free).
I'm considering the switch to Microsoft Security Essentials for all which is free.

Free Antivirus for Windows - Open source GPL virus scanner (http://www.clamwin.com/)
Clamwin free AV software is good, too.
Ask John McAfee he seems to know what is......oh, shit....looks like he is in jail now.

You don't have anything that anybody wants. Don't worry about it.

Man, you got lucky to run for over a year with no problems.
A Worm doesn't need a carrier like an email attachment or a website.
They access machines through flaws in the OS.
You don't even have to have your browser open to get one.
They find you.
