Twinkies, Zingers to be served to needy

SAN ANTONIO - The San Antonio Food Bank unexepectedly benefitted from the death of the Twinkie Monday.
Hostess Brands, the makers of Twinkies and so many other baked goods, made a big donation to the food bank even as the company is in the process of going out of business.
"Behind me is a truck full of different Hostess products, from Zingers to Twinkies to Ho Hos to Ding Dongs," said an excited Eric Cooper, President and CEO of the San Antonio Food Bank.
The tasty treats were part of a 2 1/2 truck load donation from Hostess. Originally slated for delivery to local H-E-B stores, the company unloaded the extra inventory as they go through liquidation.
"They're making sure that those families that struggle are able to get their last taste of these great items," Cooper said.
While Twinkies and Ding Dongs aren't exactly the healthiest food choices, Cooper said the 58,000 people they serve on a weekly basis deserve a treat every now and then.
"The solution to hunger is the right food in the right amount at the right time, and there's many occasions where maybe a desert or snack cake is very appropriate," Cooper said, adding that the food bank teaches moderation in it's nutrition classes. "These 2 truckloads will be spread pretty thin, and that's the moderation that's appropriate for this kind of gift."
While the donation helps stock the desert aisle at the food bank, Cooper said they can always use more food and volunteers during the holidays.
"Let Hostess be an example to us all of really thinking about those that are struggling even greater than they are," Cooper said. "Everyone can make a difference, and we just encourage the community to respond."

I loved the chocolate cream-filled Twinkies and the apple fruit pies the most. Both with a glass of milk with ice cubes in it, of course.

I never had the chocolate filled ones - found some inexpensively on eBay to try. They should get here soon...
My favorites were the cupcakes (chocolate and orange). They also had yellow cupcakes with chocolate frosting that I just found/tried - very good. :seasix:
I don't normally eat this cr@p (haven't had it in years) but if there is a possibility that they will be gone forever, well, I just have to go get some and put them away for a rainy day...

I'll give ya some of mine when they arrive. :seasix: I'll add it to the bag of b'day and xmas chocolate...
While I appreciate the sentiment, a bankrupt company doesn't need to be giving charitable donations to anyone, of any kind. They have a fiduciary responsibility to the shareholders. Even in bankruptcy, their goal should be to get the shareholders the most cents on the dollar possible for their now pretty much worthless shares.

When I lived in NY, you'd have been a short jaunt away.
Now that I'm in Virginia....not so much....

Zingers...oh man, those were so good.
Will not miss Ding dongs or cupcakes, just zingers. I found twinkies to be bland.
Zingers were the shit.

KP, pay closer attention to the punctuation:
chocolate dipped hockey puck ≠ chocolate dipped, hockey puck
