View Full Version : Ma People Firearm transport question
I am planning to fly to Florida and will check my handgun in my check bag. I have the correct type of locked container since I have traveled from NH several times. The airline has confirmed they will check the unloaded gun.
I just want to make sure my reading of the MA laws is correct and I will not get busted at Logan. Since it will be locked in my bag with no ammo it should be good for transport.

Just me.. but I would not want them to think I was trying to be sneaky..
So as soon as you get in the airport, I would say loudly, and clearly..
"I got a gun!"

Thanks George. I found the applicable laws and saw others like this before I posted
My concern is incidents like in NJ and NY. I have not heard of them in MA but I want to make sure. I have tried calling the MA gun info line but no answer yet.
I just spoke to the State police. It illegal for me to STOP anywhere in the state with a locked up firearm in my vehicle.
Checking in at the Airport is considered a stop and illegal.

What? That does not sound accurate. I'll post it on NES and see what happens.

Thanks. But I did call the state number 617-660-4782.
I will be safe VS sorry. Headed to Fed Ex in NH and will ship to my home in FL.

I hear you on the want to stay on the safe side. but keep in mind the guy you spoke to on the phone is not a lawyer, and most likely just gave you just his take, on what he thinks the law is, or should be in his own mind.
SeaSix I would think would know since he lives in FLA, but still a quick call to a lawyer would give you the answer, and also a good faith argument if a problem should happen.
The airline has already agreed to ship it for you right? picking up your luggage should not be a problem as compared to going through a check in.

Indeed I do.
I have no idea about the laws in Taxachussetts. I do know this, though. They do not like guns up there at all.

Do you really need it for your visit? Is it worth the ramificatifons i you get stopped with it and you interpreted the law incorrectly or different than the officer who stopped you did? Not worth the risk in my opinion.
It might be worth while contacting a hunting or game preserve up there that caters to out of town clients who regularly travel with guns and see what they say.

He might need it. It's better to have it and not need it than the other way around.
Plus, we love guns down here. He's more than welcome to pack heat in sunny FL. It reduces crime, so we encourage it.

No, I do not "Need it". I live part time in FL and have a few handguns there now. I just wanted to bring my newest purchase down to get some range time. I was planning on using it as my carry gun for traveling across the state of FL.
And Fed Ex does not accept Shipments to yourself.

The person I spoke with ID'd themselves as a Police officer. I DO NOT want to run into another that has the same opinion in Logan.
I will fly down to Florida again in January and leave from NH so I don't have to deal with the MA mentality.

Again I don't know anything about the laws in MA, but I have to say this. If there is a procedure for flying out of MA with a firearm, it just stands to reason that there is a way to get it to the airport legally in the first place.

:iagree:
I have read their laws and the Federal laws and believe I should be able to do it.
The problem I see is that the Police may not have been provided with the correct information simply because they don't want guns passing through MA.

You beat me to it. They just changed their policy on mailing firearms to yourself. You would need to have an FFL ship it to another FFL. As far as calling MA State Police, MA gun laws are so convoluted, very few even know them enough to enforce them properly so sometimes they default to "everything is illegal" to be safe.
Here is the NES thread. I foresee it turning into a cop bashing/ MA bashing any minute now.

Your real problem would be if you had an unexpected layover in NY or NJ.
They operate outside of the law and don't recognize federal law. The NRA just lost a case against them where they flagrantly violate Federal Law.

I will stay safe and live with the handguns I have down there now. Next time I go down I will try to fly from MHT.

Gotta love how the DoJ will go after the State of AZ and others when they try to enact laws that are the same as federal laws on immigration yet turn a blind eye to this and "Sanctuary Cites"
And People wonder why I believe the Government is the problem.
I just spoke to a Uniformed officer here. He told me the other guy I spoke with is wrong. I can travel through Logan.
Got to love MA.

We used to call them Uninformed Officers.
Try this. If flying, these are the folks you have to answer to.

Uniformed officers - uninformed officers
Detectives - defectives
Investigator - instigator
There are some more, but I can't think of them right now.

Sounds about right.
This guy from NH says he does it all the time.

That's nuts. Do all the gas stations in neghboring states have signs out front -- "last chance for gas next 150 miles if you're packing"?

Actually, there used to be signs when entering MA about the mandatory 1 year sentence for unlicensed firearm possession. Now it is a sign about texting while driving laws.

I'm glad you found out that the first officer was incorrect. My question would be, "HTF would Logan know you have a gun in your checked luggage?".

They'd know the instant you declared it, which is what you have to do.
Vite1 was concerned that an Uninformed Officer (sp intentional) would get wind of it somehow, and he'd get fuctup over "stopping" at the airport.

What can happen is a newb at check-in may panic and ask a statie what to do. If that officer is uninformed, it can create a problem.
