Badly Injured Dog Struggles To Survive
October 29, 2012 10:44 PM
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - With a rusted can wrapped around her throat, the dog, now named Olivia, was slowly starving, when she arrived at Dallas Animal Services Sunday.
Employees there peeled apart the metal slicing deep into her skin to find her battling infection, too.
“The can had likely been over her neck for over a month,” said Melody Hamilton, with Animal Allies of Texas, the rescue group now overseeing Olivia’s care.
Hamilton isn’t sure how the can got around the dog’s neck, but she has her suspicions.
“I don’t think she just slipped this on. This wasn’t her looking for a meal,” she said. “I think someone put it on, and I can’t imagine why, except to be sadistic and cruel.”
Olivia, though, wasn’t alone, when an animal advocate found her.
Standing guard over her was another dog, rescuers named Joshua.
“He was standing right by her side as she was laying on the ground,” said Jody Jones, of Dallas Animal Services.
Healthy and well-nourished, Joshua doesn’t appear to have come from the same home as Olivia, but somehow, along the way, he became her friend, maybe even her protector.
“I’m sure Joshua is what caught the passerby’s attention,” said Jones. “And, as the rescuers took the dog into the vehicle, Josh was more than happy to go along for the ride.”
With Olivia still struggling, it’s hard to tell how the story will end.
“My hope and prayers is that she survives,” said Hamilton.

Stories like this just boil your blood with righteous anger, don't they? How could anyone be so cruel, sick and twisted to deliberately do something like that to one of the most loyal, unconditionally loving creatures on the planet?

In this case I can justify an eye for an eye. Let's see how he likes it, when/if they catch the bastard.

There's just no sense in that kind of sadistic wickedness.
I have been watching this on local TV. He is doing better, but they say it will be a couple of weeks before they are sure he is OK.
A baseball bat to the knees would remind this POS everyday for the rest of their life.

Prayers for the poor dog. No animal deserves that kind of treatment.

Actually an American Bulldog. And 'Bean' is cute.
UPDATE:
Starved and nearly decapitated by a coffee can around her neck, Olivia the dog is making steady improvement since having surgery Monday.
“She’s really doing remarkably well,” said a board member with Animal Allies of Texas, who asked not to be named.
Olivia, formerly named Java, was rescued Sunday by a good Samaritan who discovered her abandoned in a common dog dumping ground at Dowdy Ferry Road and I-20.
Add another sad footnote to her story: Turns out she gave birth to a litter sometime during the month the can was around her neck. Considering her emaciated state, it’s unlikely any of the puppies survived.
Olivia will spend another week at Metro Paws Animal Hospital, after which she’ll be taken home and fostered by one of the vet technicians. The small 1- to 2-year-old shepherd mix should be adoptable in about four months. In the meantime, she’ll be treated for heart worms and spayed once she recovers.
Animal Allies officials say the case is not being investigated as abuse because Dallas Animal Services has said there’s no evidence the can was intentionally placed on Olivia’s head.
“She did not get that can on her head by her own volition,” the Animal Allies board member said. “Someone put that can on her head.”
Anyone wanting to contribute to Animal Allies or to Olivia’s care can do so through the group’s website or by calling Metro Paws at 214-887-1400.
“We have chosen to focus on nothing but good thoughts and prayers for Olivia,” the Animal Allies rep said.

It really just breaks my heart to hear these stories...to the point that I rarely even open these types of threads. :sadangel:
I heard on the radio, just last night, that firefighters in Ventura county responded to a call of a fire in a ravine. They got there and realized it was a dog that someone had doused with lighter fluid and set on fire. :nonod: The dog was severely burned and alive when they found him, but he did not survive. He belonged to a family...got out of their yard somehow. :(
Cruelty like this...I just can't even wrap my mind around it.

And here I thought the story from the OP had sent my blood pressure sky high. This one sent it through the roof! :pissed:
Muthafkrs that can do that to a poor dog should be killed. Period, end of story, no discussion from any bleeding heart sumbiches either.

Thanks. The characteristic brachycephalic head of both breeds threw me off. :seasix:

Anyone that would do that to an innocent dog doesn't deserve to be a part of society.

Hey Deacon...how about a prayer for Olivia?
Heavenly Father, we ask for your mercy on Olivia, your beloved creature. May she not suffer any more pain or emotional distress.
We ask that her health be restored and sustain her in your perfect will so she’ll live with us a little longer in this world. Her loyalty and unconditional love are sorely needed.
We ask that if extraordinary medical care is needed, that the way be provided. We ask for Olivia not to lack for any good thing, regardless of the cost.
And may she be adopted out to loving, generous owners whose hearts are yearning for the affection and companionship having a pet brings.
In the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, we ask these things for Olivia, whose weepy, doey eyes are so precious, they carry the unmistakable light of your love.
Amen. :) :seasix:

I felt that one from all the way over here, too. ;)
I know it moved the Father's heart, too.
