Unknown to most boaters is a red line with a clip on it.

That video hit all the boating forums just after Labor Day. Turns out the boat driver wasn't exactly inexperienced -- he's a former APBA racer. That experience didn't match what looks like over-zealous throttle action, though. The accident happened during a Poker Run on the Lake of the Ozarks. The boat must have hit a wave wrong and got sideways at speed. Bad news.

One of the guys on the forum explained the probable cause pretty clearly:
Having owned several of these boats and being an organizer of several poker runs, I can tell you he COMPLETELY came out of the water. That part I've done a number of times, to where you can see 1-2 boat lengths of water that your props didn't even touch. The difference is he caught the first wave odd which sent the boat in the air very crooked (that is very rare). At that point it's never pretty...when the boat lands after traveling airborn it's going to catch and hook 90 degrees.

One of the passengers on the crashed boat posted this on the OffShoreOnly forum, in a thread bashing the captain and generally making fun of the face plants captured in the video. The passenger owned up to some of the bonehead mistakes (no life jackets, not in the bolsters, etc.) and talked a bit about the injuries sustained. There was some talk that the driver might have done the zombie arms-down faceplant due to the T8 injury. Dunno if that's true.

Hey guys, I was a passenger in this boat during the accident. Yes, there are many cardinal rules broken. The most important one I feel is no life jackets worn. As crazy as it seems, we had jackets for each person but as the poker run began we realized no one else was wearing them..... How foolish we were. I have read so many nasty comments on YouTube and other sites I am in shock. My wife suffered 4 broken ribs, punctured lung and a broken foot. She has not left the house since getting home. She is in severe pain.

The driver crushed his eye orbital and broke hus back at T8 ( he is a former F-2 racer with APBA). Another passenger who raced professionally for many years broke his pelvis in several places and is in a wheelchair. One of the other girls crushed her eye orbital also. The guy from lake tv fractured his hip and broke his wrist. My injuries were minor compared, busted my head open and damaged a rib or two. Everyone is black and blue.

This was a very upsetting event for everyone involved. I have been around powerboats for many years and it only takes on unguarded minute to loose a life or permanently hurt people you love. I am very thankful this did not end up worse. I hope everyone learns from this. I know I will boat differently. All of the guys in the boat are members of OSO. I think it is necessary to break down the accident and discuss this, just remember these are real people who like you who love power boating and do it every weekend.

If your gonna be roaring around in one of those, not being firmly buckled in just seems foolish to me.
