When I got home I read the news on Yahoo! There's a long article about Hurricane Sandy being the "October Surprise" in politics. I read the comments, and most were benign until someone named Linda posted something that read like this (replying to another poster):

"What are you, from Mississippi or something? Racists are alive and well! And it was bush who spent the surplus."

My reply:

"Linda, your ignorance is showing. Mississippi has more Black elected officials--not more per capita...more--than any other State. Most Cities in Mississippi, including the Capital of Jackson have a black majority population. Believe it or not, people get along just fine here...and we don't own slaves, either."

Why do liberals and Northerners think that we still are a forlorn state of poor, illiterate, racist "good ole boys"? The old stereotype of the short, fat, white, bald men in suits smoking cigars just doesn't carry weight. People think that the Klan and white supremacist groups in general are Mississippi artifacts, but that simply is not the truth. There are as many hate groups, and certainly as many hate crimes, in Northern and even coastal states.

And, Mississippians have consistently given more per capita to charity in relation to income than residents of any other state.

Mississippi doesn't deny the fact that it had a segregationist past--that is undeniably true. But, peeps...those folks are long dead. If you find a survivor of that era, he or she will be in a nursing home awaiting death.

Certainly true, friend. I was just hoping that here, in the 21st century, we might as least try to get over the bullshit. By that I don't mean that prejudice is eliminated; I mean that the South, and Mississippi in particular, doesn't have a monopoly on it. People come here, I think, believing that a KKK parade is held daily.

Peeps in Miami seem to hate everyone--Cubans, Hispanics, Blacks, Whites, Jews, Northerners, Southerners, etc. Peeps in NYC seem to hate...everyone who is not just like "them", whoever TF that is. I have never seen such racism as I see in NYC. But what is the racism "capital of the world"? Mississippi.

The O.J. Simpson trial was a vivid reminder: 90% of white people felt he was guilty...90% of black people felt he was innocent. Otherwise normal, rational people of either race agreed on other matters. That was the case throughout the U.S.A. My point remains: Why is Mississippi still singled out as the bastion of racial hatred?

To be honest I've rarely ever been around racism.
If it was around me I wouldn't be there long.

Maybe the government should start setting up bus tours that take people out of their utopia(as jeff puts it) and show them there is more to life.
I think a lot of folks would be surprised as to what they see and how much they can enjoy other parts of your own country.

People here would say I hate Montreal, or Toronto or B.C. or something but they would have no issue travelling across Canada and seeing the way others live.

Exactly the same here. Can it be that people just feel somehow "comfortable" with their prejudices in order to justify themselves? I just don't get it otherwise. Peeps seem so blase about it, like, "I'm not prejudiced in what I say or feel because...it's true."
