I was going to wait until Spring to do that. Is supposed to be done in the Fall?

Yes. You find them in bogs. In Winter you pour kerosene on the plants to kill them, then wait a few months and pick the pickled fruit. Good eatin', my friend!

I first planted some in august of last year. I don't think they care when you do it.

As long as you're planting, OP, why not mix in some ever-bearers? They produce all Spring and most of the Summer.

I have mostly ever-bearers.

1 question though, since this is my first year.
I have "runners" that are shooting off the main plant, outwards 2 or so feet in all directions.
Should I let them go or should I keep the plant somewhat compact?

Let them run to their little heart's content. Eventually the plant that started it all will die, but the runners will live. BTW, to OP and others, after about 5 years almost all strawberry plants get diseased, resulting in deformed, tough fruit. When that happens all the plants should be destroyed and new ones planted. Experts recommend that you plan ahead for this by planting a new crop in 4-5 years and then destroy the old crop the following year.
