..don't wreck your motorcycle....

Hope you get out of the hospital soon Roger and glad you're keeping your sense of humor about it. I also hope the news about your back is good.

Don't laugh though, that will make it hurt...lots....:seasix:

Get well soon my friend and get your butt back to Virginia.

Apparently, someone else from the forum was a witness to the event...:leaving:

LOL... I'm bummed the guy had a wreck, but let's not get crazy.

Harleys are good places to hang chrome, good noise makers, excellent for spending money and, done right, actually look good, so they're great profilers.

What they aren't are good motorcycles.

You ever owned one?

Yes, I have. I've been on two wheels since I was seven and I've had the big three Japanese makes, Harley and a Triumph. I've ridden many more than I've owned as well.

I work in a motorcycle focused shop, at one of the biggest destinations for motorcycles in the country.

When I talk about motorcycles, I speak from decades of personal experience.

So, what makes them not good motorcycles in your opinion?

Because there are bikes that do everything Harley does, only better, for less money.

They are less reliable than almost anything else on the road, mostly thanks to an unrealistic amount of chassis vibration, can be an unholy pain in the ass to work on (gotta love half-year parts changes that they don't put in the shop manuals), and the Harley Tax makes the Corvette Tax look a pittance by comparison. For example: The front tire on my Suzuki is also the OEM front tire on the Fatboy, only they actually emboss "Harley Davidson" on the sidewall for the Fatboy. Price difference? $80. That is wholesale. Same tire, just has 14 extra letters on the sidewall.

I will grant you that Harley's business plan is amazing. I've said it many times; If you want to ride, you're spoiled for choice. But if you want a Harley, only a Harley will do. They've created a mythos based around the brand that is incredibly attractive to people; The idea of a Harley Davidson as an expression of personal freedom. In that way, they are unparalleled. People ride them as symbols, and that's great.

It just doesn't make them good motorcycles.

Burro (He/Haw)

Pre Evo I would agree. Not the case these days.

Outside of your claim they are hard to work on, that doesn't make them bad motorcycles does it?

Go back and read that post again. When you get to the end of the first line... stop.

That is why Harleys aren't good motorcycles. There is only one thing Harley does best when you're out riding, and that's be a Harley. Other bikes handle better, have more power, use less fuel, carry more stuff and are more comfortable.

Ok, I'll give you that.

I don't see the issue with riding a Harley anyway, good or bad.

I talked to a couple on a Ural sidecar rig today, while the mechanic was chasing an electrical gremlin it had developed on their way down from Illinois. The guy was telling me how horrible the handling is, how uncomfortable it was and how much fun they were having.

It isn't what you ride, it's that you ride.

A couple weeks ago, I was on my way home from work and I was first at the intersection in the right lane. The guy who pulls up to my left isn't wearing as many logos as most and the Harley is mostly matte black with wood accents and not much chrome. He has the idiotic raised handlebars and woman-in-gynecology-exam-stirrups riding position. It's an ugly, obnoxious pile of s**t like the rest, but in a more subdued way. Anyway, the light turns green and I drive across the intersection. Harley Stealthdouche apparently wasn't paying attention but damned if he's going to let me be the first across the intersection. I'm not even at half-throttle and I hear a whole bunch of noise to my left. Halfway across the intersection, Harley Stealthdouche passes me with the hammer down. For a moment, I was a sure I would be witness to an epic fail of stupendous proportion. Harley Stealthdouche crosses the intersection so far to his left that his tires run down the middle of the double yellow lanes dividing his lane and opposing traffic. How he missed the cars waiting to turn left, or at least their side view mirrors, I'll never know.

He wanted to be the center of attention and almost got his wish in a big way.

That Jetsons-looking full bagger is hideous.

I also find myself with an irrational hatred toward the Can-Am Spyder, but that's because it isn't really a bike, and snowmobiles are meant for snow.

Where my dad used to work, there was an asshole on a sport bike that went by on his way to the local college, every morning, on time.

He'd leave the light, get about 1/10 mile down the road and punch it...lift the front tire, etc...acting like an asshole. weaving in and out of cars, its a narrow 4 lane road, divided by a concrete median, and its curvy and hilly as ****, but only about 3/4 mile long tops.

So one morning...my dad hears him go wide open, then screeching and grinding, and tires squealing. Asshole took off and lifted the front tire near the median, locked up the rear tire trying to correct it, flipped...the road was closed for hours, they were out there with shovels cleaning him up, the bike creamed him, then the traffic he was desperately trying to weave though...ran over his ass.

Play with fire, get burned...and thats how I feel about all the douchebag motorcyclists I see running around going up the centerline in traffic, or jumping the medians to make a turn, doing 100+ in traffic....the same people that cry "look twice".

People that obey laws, and drive safely...I got no problem with em.
