Maintenance delays push Endeavour arrival to 7 a.m. at earliest

October 14, 2012
1:13 am

The space shuttle Endeavour was unlikely to reach the California Science Center until 7 a.m. at the earliest, as crews experienced a longer than expected delay in reconfiguring the transport system for the final stretch home.

At 1 a.m. Sunday, the shuttle remained at the corner of Crenshaw and Martin Luther King Jr. boulevards, after having arrived at that intersection at 8 p.m. Saturday for what was supposed to be a two-hour maintenance job.

The original plan called for reconfiguring the two pairs of wheeled motorized trailers, on which the shuttle sits, to move closer to each other so Endeavour can easily navigate the narrower roadway on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. They also had to install narrower beams that supported the spacecraft.

But crews had to grind off a stuck bolt, and underwent a worker shift change, as well as replace the hydraulic fluid in the rollers.

California Science Center President Jeffrey N. Rudolph said that once the shuttle leaves the intersection, it will take at least six hours for it to reach the museum, which is 2.6 miles away. And it could take longer.

The shuttle was supposed to arrive at the museum at 9 p.m. Saturday, but encountered lengthy delays as it navigated trees and utility poles. Officials said they wanted to keep as many trees and poles in place as possible. The good news was that the shuttle has survived the move so far without even a scratch, despite passing inches away from buildings and trees.

In the city of Los Angeles alone, 268 trees were cut down for the move (and more than 700 will be replanted as replacements). Officials also had temporarily taken down 223 traffic signals, and more than 100 power lines and utility wires were raised.

I hope it doesn't get tagged. :leaving:

Latest report:

LOS ANGELES -- The space shuttle Endeavour is finally on the home stretch of its journey through Los Angeles streets to its retirement at a museum.

Officials are estimating that the space craft will reach the California Science Museum around 11 a.m. PDT Sunday.

It was originally expected to arrive early Saturday evening, but it hit repeated delays throughout the day.

The Endeavour was towed out of Los Angeles International Airport early Friday and by Saturday morning it was 90 minutes ahead of schedule. But accumulated hurdles and hiccups caused it to run hours behind at day's end.

The problems included longer than expected maintenance of the rig carrying the shuttle and physical obstacles within the shuttle's wingspan including light posts, building edges, and most of all trees.

The thousands of people watching along the streets remained peaceful and their mood at times seemed festive. Police report they haven't made a single arrest.

Stupid shuttle caused me to miss my flight to the Netherlands.

Longer version:
--------------
We taxied to the end of the taxiway adjacent to runway 25R and made a u-turn so people could see and take pics of them lifting the shuttle off of the 747 transporter. It was cool and everything, but our fully loaded 757 overheated the brakes driving the extra couple of miles and had an hour delay before they could take off. I missed my international connection and then my replacement connection flight to London broke down in DC because nobody on nightshift knew what the F they were doing. Good thing we didn't just leave on time and saw the shuttle instead.

Looks like the Santa Ana winds are kicking up a little today. They better get that shuttle put away.

Let's get serious. The thing would be tore up from the floor up....copper wiring stripped, electronics stolen, probably set on fire, etc. Then the destroyed hulk would be tagged.
