It's a Stihl, about 2 1/2 years old. Today I tried to start it, and the rope was very difficult to pull at first. When it finally started, it would only run with the choke on, even when heated up. It sounds like gum deposits in the carb to me, but it was used less than a month ago. Ethanol?

I was really expecting some blood in this thread.

I was afraid to look. Thought he might have whacked a cat.
Have you tried spraying down the carb with carb cleaner yet? Does it run the same with the air filter off? Have you tried changing the fuel filter in the tank?

No, I haven't done anything to it yet. I did the trimming and shut it down 'cause my azz was dragging.

It never hurts to douche down the carb with carb cleaner, change the fuel filter and fuel (if old), and clean the air filter.
You mentioned the pull rope was hard to pull. You haven't run the trimmer lean on oil by chance?

Did you run it on straight gas before? Sounds like it may be tight from overheating aka no oil? Add some fuel injector/carb clean to the gas and run a tank through it. Was the gas mix old?

I'll get some carb cleaner tomorrow and perform the rituals. Nope, haven't run it lean--always one little bottle of oil per gallon of gasoline. BTW, the fuel mixture was just made today with fresh gasoline. I always mix a new batch if it's over a month or two old.

Trying to polite. Spence is very sensitive.

Stop pissing in it Larry.
Mine has to be pumped 7 times (with the choke on) till it kinda turns over. As soon as that happens, I take the choke off and it fires right up. If it's the carb, they only cost $65.
Toss it and buy a new one. You are rich.

Why...yes, I am! Thank you for appreciating that about me... People say I'm almost as sensitive as a Mack truck.:D
I started adding that ethanol remover stuff to my gas this year on the recommendation of my Stihl dealer.

I saw this special on small motors, and they showed the gum in the fuel bowels left from carppy ethanol gas after just 28 days! :ack:

That has to be what it is. I'll check the air cleaner and fuel filter tomorrow just to be sure. I hope the carb cleaner does its job.

cleaning the outside of the carb will accomplish nothing...
Hard to turn over could be a number of things, from oil/fuel seeping into the cylinder, to the engine being galled up...to you having ***** arms...who knows.
Does it still pull over hard/easy now?
Id pull the carb, put in a new kit, mainly the metering diaphragm and needle...and go fro, there.
Ethanol helper...is called "Star-Tron", its an enzyme additive that fixes ethanol in fuel, but it will not fix damage.
Id also suggest, pulling the muffler off and looking at the piston and cylinder through the port...if its galled up, shit can it and get an ECHO...
