Looking on the website and DirecTV is offering the Genie 1TB whole house DVR. It's a new unit but I'm looking for people that have whole house DVR. Is it worth it ? I have 5 TVs I'd like to hook up.

I had whole house DVr with Uverse, it was pretty nice, but I didn't use it nearly as often as I thought I would.

I've older HD equipment and this would be an opportunity to upgrade plus get rid of these big bulky receivers.
I decided against the top of the line equipment, but I don have the whole home dvr.
It's nice...
What questions do you have, in particular?
FWIW, we only have two tv's now.

Does it allow you to record multiple things at once? I'm with Stangkiller, I have uverse we used the whole house feature a lot more when the kids were still home, not so much anymore. Its the multiple recordings that we use most now...

How well does it work- learning curve, etc... Does the house have to be rewired ?

Works well...I use wireless.
No learning curve at all.
Works just the same as the dvr you have now.
You just see the playlist on all tvs.
I do have to reset the brand new router when it loses connection, but it is on opposite corners of the house.
Just got Dtv in July when we moved into the new house...but no problems, and I kind of wish I had gone with a nicer dvr for the main tv.
Only downside we've found is that if you are watching in a room that has just the little receiver, you cannot pause live tv.
It's not a dvr itself.

So it has it's own wireless or uses your router ?

I use my router.
You can do it wired, but I didn't want to pull new cabling for it.
Brand new house, and to be honest, it was an afterthought.

Thanks for the info. I'd do the same thing.

You'll need the DirecTV Cinema Connection Kit.
DIRECTV What is the DIRECTV CINEMA? Connection Kit? (http://support.directv.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/2993)
I assume you would need one for each tv...
It's basically how the little receiver gets the wifi signal.

It's a 5 tuner DVR (you can record up to 5 things at once). It's the HR-34 rebranded with some new software called "Genie"
At other tuners you can use RVU units, which are just dumb terminals that can play live or recorded TV using the whole home DVR, or you can use other DVRs/tuners that will work as normal and share recorded items off of the whole home DVR.
I'm considering picking one up to replace my main DVR, but not particularly for the shared TV stuff. I have 3 HD DVRs that are all networked right now, but it would be more convenient to have 5 tuners on one device. It is also a faster device, and I'd like to move off of my HR-22 in the living room.

Yea, I'm working them over right now. $299 for the unit and $99 for the dumb terminals and I need 5 of those bad boys. I figure ill call every week until they get tired of me and give me the new subscriber offer.
I've had mine since April and love it. I have 4 HD tvs hooked up. Can watch recording and record from any location. Still limited to recording 2 shows at a time though.
Easy operation and the Ipad app rocks, you can use it as a remote, and set up recordings anywhere you have wireless access and watch lots of show and movie on your ipad. :seasix:

You have the HR-24 or the HR-34? The HR-34 should be able to record 5 shows at once.

Must be the HR 24. :banghead::banghead:
Even so, it's beats the hell out of comcast in this area.

So can I, but one of the 3 DVRs is a pain to manage.
One of them has a slingbox. The other is the main DVR.
I can set stuff to record on any of them from my phone/ipad. Watch anything that records on any of them on any of the other DVRs.

I had directv installed this past monday after being with comcast for years. The whole house will not have to be rewired if you already have RG6 coax cable. My house was built in 99 and already has RG6, so they were able to connect to my existing lines.
I have the whole whole home HD DVR box. I really like it so far. I installed the connection kit yesterday for the on demand. So far the picture quality is so much better than cable.

I have DirecTV whole-house DVR (two DVR's and a regular HD receiver all connected together) and it's great! Works great too. A friend has the new-style setup like you mentioned and he loves it.

The only downside I've found is that we tend to lose our power from time to time. When that happens it has trouble reestablishing the network connection. I have to manually reset the IP numbers so that it also links to the iPad on the wireless net.

Hmmm, I've not had that problem. We lose power here at least once a month it seems.

It's weird- DTV doesn't want to take the DHCP address. It gives a default 192.168.X.X structure and that's not what I have on my side of the firewall.
