View Full Version : Lost my best friend today

Had to put my best friend of 17 years down this morning. When he woke up this morning his back legs weren't working right when I let him outside to do his business. I found him lying in the yard a few minutes later and he wouldn't move so I carried him inside and laid down with him where he started to have a seizure. I took him to the vet and he had another seizure in the car which totally scared the crap out of me. Anyway the vet looked him over and decided his nervous system was giving out so that was that. He didn't seem like he was in pain so that was good and he never had one health issue his whole life so I'm kind of glad it was over quick.

I knew this day would come someday but it really sucks that he's gone and I'm really going to miss him so much. He was honestly the coolest dog I've ever met and I feel like I owe him a ton for being my best bud all those years.

Anyway, here's to you Munch, thanks again for everything.

:sadangel: My heart goes out to you. May God rest his little critter soul.

I absolutely loathe the day my best buddy passes. :(

You gotta lot of love in you, so consider sharing some with a new rescue.

I had a Chow/German Shepherd mix for 13 years. Had to have him put down a month after my father died. I went another three years before I got my Springer. I dread the day he goes. These posts always bring a tear to my eye. So sorry for your loss but rest assured he knows how you felt and returned it many times over. :sadangel::sadangel:

Dam man, I really am sorry for your loss. :sadangel:
I hate reading posts like these. Always brings a tear to my eye. It's the worst feeling in the world when you lose your best friend. All they give is unconditional love and ask nothing in return except your companionship.

Dang Steve...sorry to hear this news. Trust me...I know the hurt that losing your best bud can cause. I went through the exact same thing a little over a year ago. I too had a dog for 17 years...Shelly was part of the family and losing her really hurt. So just look back and appreciate the smile that Munch put on your face each day and take some comfort knowing that he and Shelly are in doggie heaven running and playing together somewhere!

And my wife knew the best medicine for that empty spot in my heart...Our puppy came along 6 weeks later and he keeps me smiling every day.

Thanks everyone for your kind sentiments. Yesterday was hell but I'm feeling a bit better today so that is good. I do have tons of great memories from our time together so actually I am really happy about how lucky I was to have him for so long. One thing that occured to me is that he was the first thing in my life that I really loved that I have lost and I am 42 so I have been very lucky in that respect.

Sorry for you loss. The year we moved to Indiana we had to put down two of our old girls for very similar reasons, one was 21 years old and the other 18. It leaves an empty spot in your heart.
A year after losing these two we lost my best buddy Ewok and then his sister Holly. Five years later we still laugh and talk about all the fun and laughter our dogs have brought us.
There is a poem out there I think it is called the Rainbow Bridge, it hits home on all of the pets.

Our K9's get deep in our hearts. Sorry for your loss Munch:paw2:

Like Jimmy, we couldn't help but try to fill the void of our Hallie when she left us at two years old a coupel fo years ago. Your pup has great company, here is just one of the many friends your pup is playing with now:yesnod:

Condolences Munch. My 5 Danes all died in their sleep at 10-12 years old.. My Basset I had to put down at 6 years old from Lymphoma. That was tough.

You did the right thing. It's selfish to let them struggle when they're not having fun anymore.

So what do you do now, buy a new puppy right away or wait for a bit?

Wife got a new Boston terrier a couple weeks ago so we have two now, that's enough for the time being. I'd like a mans dog down the road but we have other plans we're working on right now.

Steve, sorry for your pain, brother. It's amazing how much compassion and love we have for our best friends. May the coming days be filled with only the cherished memories of the companionship you shared.
