Kind of like that when the cop in front of you takes the off ramp

We have those stupid little red lights at the entrance ramps to a few freeways in Houston. I understand the concept, to put a little space between the cars entering to make it easier to merge, but come on, really? Those lights are the stupidest thing I have ever seen our tax dollars wasted on, and that's really saying something.

The few times I have actually seen people stop for them, they usually narrowly miss getting rear ended by other motorists who actually live in the real world, not the hypothetical traffic management world.

I follow the guy in front of me on his green, I really wish people would ignor those things.

In Atlanta they are used mostly for congestion on on ramps to initiate the zipper style merging on the on ramp before you hit the actually interstate. There are usually two lights one for each lane alternating back and forth. During off peak hours and weekends they are off.

Ours are off during off peak as well.

We have those on possibly every onramp in this area. People don't seem to have any trouble following directions.

These things are why I voted no on that recent transpertation bill. Any agency that thinks its smart to put a red light at the end of an entrance ramp already has more money than it should have.

So in the real world, the assumption is that the person in front of you is going to ignore the hypothetical red light? Brilliant!!!

Shit, the GOD DAMNED .gov can't even sequence a friggin traffic light sequence to keep the majority/bulk of traffic flowing decently, let alone that type of stupid traffic 'management'......

I 'grew up' in the Wash DC region, so always thought it was 'normal' to go from red light to red light and stop for every damn one in sequence,

Then in '70 I went to Texas, Dallas FW area.....and found out a few things.....NUMBER ONE, you don't run no red light in TEXAS, you WILL BE KILLED, and the junkyards proved the point.....

BUT, the traffic kept flowing, you maybe turn a corner and hit a red light....but then as long as your kept on that same road, you never hit another, that was working as a outside TV tech, so my route was random at any particular time of day......same traffic amount as Wash DC....

BUT today, same traffic just this morning, for a doctor appointment, and so I had to stop and accelerate about 25 times for NO GOOD REASON,

there is simply NO reason for that bullshit, pay attention folks, it's a result of the FED .gov and the DOT bux, and yes I"m serious.....DEAD serious....

Doubt what I say?? get out on your daily drives and pay attention to the routs and stops.....and think....

Safety tip: when you come to Houston, let a Houston resident drive you around.

I thing it should be part of every driver's license test in the country to require the noob driver to merge onto a busy freeway. If she (hehe) can't, automatic FAIL! I've almost rearended a few dizzy fools stopped in the merge lane, afraid to MERGE!

Serious.

If I happen to run a light, there always seems to be three cars behind me that did so worse than me.

Just this morning, I was driving in the HOV lane, into which a lady was trying to merge.

The Bitch honked at ME, because I didn't slam on my brakes to let her over, I stayed at a constant speed and distance, I did not try to block her from merging. What's funny is later on, she did the same thing to somebody else trying to merge on. What a c*nt.

Another favorite bitch, I judge traffic distance by my front yard in suburbia....typically either 60 or 90' wide, that will make a ~1/4 acre lot for each house, depending on shape.....

and so I get to be a fairly good judge of distance between cars.....

and I really bitch over these idiots that leave 90-200' between cars, the guy ahead of them is pulling away and they setting there, resigned to a ten mile trip at a average speed of maybe 20 mph.....

and there is NO reason for it, ......

it's the FED.gov war on the suburbs.....

and anything else is bullshit....BTDT, know first hand what I speak....

Frizzle
10-03-2012, 4:53pm
really don't got that crap around here....

When your on an on ramp for the love of god... please be at least going the speed of the posted speed limit and preferably faster! Nothing worse when your trying to merge nicely into traffic and the idiot in front of you is puttering along at 35mph on an on ramp.

Also another big pet peeve of mine is people hitting the brakes on the highway for no apparent reason. Take your foot off of the gas... you will slow down, no need to go from 75 to 65 in 5 seconds because your creeping up on another car. Just take your foot off the gas place it over above the break and if you need to apply your breaks then do so. Just don't tap the breaks to slow down. IDIOTS!

mrvette
10-03-2012, 5:07pm
I brake with the left foot, even with a stick shift, and obviously that changes with conditions....not rocket science.....

What I bitch about is some dumb fock braking with 100+ feet instead of closing distance in some organized manner.....all that does is make traffic behind have to stop for no reason, at a light they could have made and been on their way.....

and yes I know the 'traffic management' arguments from the 'professionals', and know it to be bullshit.....

once again, I know more than they do......dead seriously....

I've driven around Houston before. I have family in Texas and I travel for work. I've spent chunks of time all over Texas. Zero issues. :island14:

The worst places that I've had the experience of driving is New York areas, Atlanta and Los Angeles. Congestion and idiot drivers. However, I've yet to be rear ended at an entrance ramp. :p

I go through there two to three times a year and it's really not a big deal. In grad school (1999-2004) I was up there several times a year for research and it's not bad.

I got in the habit of using the HOV on-ramp merge lane. Nobody on that sucka. You usually see CHP checking for solo riders violating the diamond lane about once a year.

It's a sphincter pucker moment when the 1 in 365 chance hits your number though.

The HOV lanes are heavily patrolled here...big ticket! There have been some people here who have ridden with blow up dolls to try to fool the cops.

That's a OLD trick, from when I lived there yet....

I was with my newly retarred buddy, and so 4 of us were in same SUV, and he was driving down many familiar roads I not been on in years, and in the mid afternoon, coming in from Fredrick Md, I 270 became a parking lot, off there into rt 355 and 28 and whatever, we cut down Shady Grover Rd. and all over the joint, traffic was in shut down, finally went over top of the I 495 DC beltway and it was stopped dead in both directions far as I could see....long about 4pm or so......Larry said it was typical and normal for that time of day......and he was GLAD to be retarred......he used to leave his Bethesda Md. apartment at 5 AM drive to DC in about 30 minits instead of 1.5 hours, clock in thanks to flex time, and then clock out at 2 or so to beat the crush rush home...

the last 15 years have NOT been kind to that town.....

I certainly not liking the stupid traffic management the FED DOT has forced on this town either.....but not so ashamed of the vette still got 17 mpg, stopping every 1/4-1 mile for each and every light on the road....dead seriously each and every light.....lovely traffic management idiots.....

and it's because of FEDERAL highway funds....build the roads with our money, and have to accept OUR stupidity.....

:issues::issues::slap:

they can't ever run a simple highway system how in hell they going to run SCHOOLS????
