Is that cool or what! No pun intended! :D
We use to just freeze the street and play road hockey all day and night.

I spent many a day flooding at the local playground. Kids dont skate outdoors anymore. Now, it's Ice Time. And they pay a fortune.

That goes to show you the lengths Canadian parents go for their kids. That's so cool, and at least 3 neighbors getting along well enough to do it. :hurray::canadian:
We used to lower the level in our pool and use the concrete walls for boards! Good thing there was no body checking. Did manage to get a slapshot through a picture window though. Yikes!:willy:

When we use to rent the ice to play a fun game it was $100 hour. Split up between 10-12 people it was good for a few hours.
Now up here it's between $500-750 depending on the time and the conditions of the rink.
Looks like Calgary...

It's even more obvious on Hwy 95 south.
Don't the wee little ones play on birdbaths with Woodstock and Snoopie?

I always wondered what Canada did for the 4th of July.

Uh, we don't celebrate July 4th. July 1st is Canada day though.
I'm sure there are a lot of pick up games being played.

We always skated at the pond or sometimes on the river..
Now a days the parents would probably be charged for child endangerment.. :sadangel:

I thought the only seasons in Canada were Winter and the 4th of July?
I was in Vancouver last year on Canada Day and had a great time. Somewhere I have a pic of me at the Olympic flame during a hellaciously loud rock concert.

There was always at least one kid whose dad let him flood the yard and turn it into a rink. I tried it once. Man was my pop pissed.

Inland lakes freeze real well. Shovel the snow away and strap on the skates.
We lived on a canal growing up and had a huge ice rink on the end of it. We used to put a little water over the ice to get a nice smooth surface for some great hockey games. It was nice to have the snow sides, made getting checked into one a little softer landing. :kick:

Surprised you not concerned about falling through the ice in a thin spot, how in hell you know??
My ex FIL had that happen to him out on Long Island decades ago, damn nearly killed him, he got lucky....

We always did it when I was a kid, and always loved skating in the winters, there was a pond nearby in the gravel pit.
I was just thinking about how times have changed, and about anything and everything where there is a potential for some kind of danger, someone would come along and blame the parents for letting them do it.
Dad would sometimes tow me on my sled with a rope down the street behind his Jeep.
I'm sure that would be frowned on today also.

I'm lucky enough to live in Ottawa, the capital, and home of the world's longest skating rink. Hopefully it will be a little colder this winter to get the req'd thickness of ice for the BIG skate...........

Pretty cool actually. :cool1:
One of my ex-neighbors does a redneck version of that in his front yard.
Thank Jebus he's an ex-neighbor. :D
I saw that picture, or one like it, a few years ago.
I sent it to some people I work with from time to time in Montreal, and they told me that sort of thing is more common than you think in the Great White North...

Because Americans don't have a clue what's going on outside their borders and just make errant assumptions

I've been wanting to go there for years. Until this year I'd never been able to skate on a pond, and had always wanted to. Dixie let me pick the honeymoon destination and I chose Keystone based on the fact it had the largest outdoor skating area.

If we get a nice long freeze this winter, I'll be building a little rink up on the deck. :seasix:

...
After a couple weeks with temps below freezing there's no such thing as thin ice. Thin ice happens to people who don't have the patience to wait more than a couple days.

I would say "and" rather than or. Springs are the last to freeze but even they will get solid if you wait long enough.
