-- A man is in critical condition after apparently ending up in the tiger den at the Bronx Zoo.
The NYPD says in a preliminary report it appears the 25-year-old man jumped into the tiger den.
He has an amputated left foot and other injuries consistent with a tiger attack.
He was taken to Jacobi Medical Center.
"The tiger was minding his own business," police deputy commissioner paul browne said "up until the man climbed TWO sets of fences to climb into the enclosure."
Asked if the man was emotionally disturbed, "it certainly appears that way," police official said.
The man climbed over TWO sets of barriers, a first fence thay led down to a second level where he climbed a second fence to get to the tiger. "
The zoo released the following statement: "A passenger on the Bronx Zoo's Wild Asia Monorail jumped out of the car he was riding in, clearing the exhibit's perimeter fence into a tiger exhibit around 3pm today. Our emergency response staff immediately went to the site and used a CO2 fire extinguisher to move the tiger away from the person. Once the tiger backed off, the man was instructed to roll under a hot wire to safety. The keepers were able to call the tiger into its off exhibit holding area and safely secured the animal. The man, about 25 years of age, conscious and talking, was taken to the hospital by ambulance. If not for the quick response by our staff and their ability to perform well in emergency situations, the outcome would have been very different."
The official line is that he did in fact leap from the open-air monorail.
Gotta give him points for creative thinking...
