"Christmas Tree" pepper plant: It's a dark green, very bushy plant that produces a prolific crop of edible peppers. The peppers are green, then yellow, then orange, and finally red. Not too hot, great for eating off the plant with a beer or for canning. It's a perfect substitute or complement for patio flowers.

Patio Fig: It produces full-size figs and a pretty good crop, too. It reaches only 2'-3' tall, so it's the perfect patio size.

Patio Lemon Tree: It produces an abundance of lemons that are very flavorful. It needs to be brought indoors in the Winter, but the scent inside the house is great. Limes are good too. I'd avoid the patio-sized orange and apple trees. Small fruit, not very tasty.

Patio Banana Tree: It produces edible 3"-4" long bananas that have a decidedly vanilla custard taste. It needs Winter protection too, but you can get 20' tall banana trees that are hardy to -20 degrees F (Zones 5-11). Their leaves and flowers are breathtaking, but the fruit is inedible or has large seeds.

Peeps, what you've posted so far are nothing but patio staples! Mickey D's of lunches...plain pancakes at IHOP's...Bayer's of aspirin...C-4's of Corvettes! I said 'unusual'!

I mostly got into "exotic" herbs this year, since I'm away to often to take care of veggies and the snails that eat them.
Here's two for on the patio, although both need a trellis(that can be done within the pot):
Jiagoulan
Mexican mini cucumber
Edit: And we discovered "Pistou" basil this year. Very delicate, bushy growing basil. Great for a pot and the small leaves are awesome.

Got my saffron in the ground last week... They flower in the Fall. Need to dig them up and bring em in for the Winter around here. Some grow them in pots to facilitate that... I'm not messing around with 4 dozen pots.

Angel Trumpet plant.
It goes in the heated sunroom for the winter.
Plus we also have 2 Gardenia's in pots

Here's an idea I read about keeping banana trees alive during Winter: Decorate the tree with outdoor lights, not mini-kights but full-size bulbs. The heat from the lights keep them alive.
I'm growing some of these on the back patio:

attention DEA: I'm not REALLY growing that on the back patio. It's a joke. Please don't raid my house or I'll sue you and get new doors, carpet, and maybe new wallpaper out of the civil suit. On second thought, go on ahead and raid my house. It could use some redecorating.
