View Full Version : They say they worst thing about a Cummins engine...

...is that they come under the hood of a dodge truck...
But there is no denying the simplicity, and power, as well as the reliablity and response to cheap mods, than a Gen 1/2 6BT Cummins Turbo Diesel...right?
Im thinking of selling my Jeep and picking up a 3rd truck, for giggles, im told these trucks get like 16mpg even with no overdrive...which is what the jeep gets, if not a little better.

These dodges were not fun to look at, and a refresh was long overdue, but honestly...I dont mind em, good solid bodies, and no denying the 727TF is a good tranny.
What do you all think about the old dodges and cummins?

Pull the diesel and tranny and throw the truck away. :seasix:

Great truck, rode like a lumber wagon, ugly as a mud fence. Have no use for a 2WD Duallie (or 2WD anything else), so that counts me out before you even start.

Around here, 4wd duallies are few and far between...especially running ones.
Im told that with a fueling pin swap, turn up the fuel some, better exhaust....these lay down 500 ft/lbs all day long and get good mileage doing it.
Im not one of those people that wants to roll coal...

I kinda like the look of the older Dodges( and Chev's and Ford's). They look like..., well, trucks. :seasix:

Can't go wrong with a Cummins. :seasix::D

Someone would have to pay me to drive that thing and $2,900 wouldn't be enough.

I hate trucks.
They're almost as ugly as elcamino's.

Those old Doges are fugly, find a Ford 7.3 Powerstroke, mine has 314,000 miles on it and still is as strong as new,I put a 4" exhaust ,cold air intake and a power hungry chip in and that thing will fly,I pull a 36ft camper in the mountains and it does well and still gets 18-19 mpg.

Pretty low miles for a Cummins. Probably not a bad deal if the transmission and rest of the truck are decent.

Guess where we work and what engine is built there.

I thought the worst part was the chrysler transmission it was attached to.

I could be wrong, but the older non-electric overdrive transmissions were pretty solid for Dodge trucks, but the electronic overdrive ones that you find in the mini-vans and light cars were pretty much crap (they also didn't fare well when put in trucks with the Cab Forward design).
If it had 4WD and a manual, that would be a great truck.

The Cummins produced too much torque for even the older transmissions.

That makes sense.
My dad had a '73 Dodge with the 360, and the transmission was never an issue, but that truck wouldn't idle worth a damn.

Stock that truck was 160/400 at the motor... You should get 500 at the motor by jacking up the fuel ect. But I would watch the egts and you will be rolling coal. And don't expect to keep up with anything new cause that is not enough horsepower to be remotely quick and the trans prolly will not hold the power. Get a ford, put in a later 6bt ho those have around 300/600 best of both worlds.

I can't speak for the older trucks, but I don't get 16mpg in my 10 Dodge 2500. I only wished I could get that. Damn thing is a diesel hog. I don't even drive it anymore unless I need to pull something. The pain at fillup is just to harsh.

Wow, that is interesting most every cummins person I have ever talked to are convinced they are getting 20+ stock. I get 15.5 city 18 highway in my 7500 lb f350 6.0 with 400/800 at the wheels. Have you thought of getting a tuner you should be able to squeeze some decent mpg out of that.

I know on the ones in semis, changing the button in the fuel pump wasn't the best way to turn them up. the secret to cummins was all in the injector timing.

Maybe I should look into that. Pulling a trailer, I'm damn lucky to get 10mpg, and the best I have ever seen at highway empty is 17-18, and that's with a tailwind.

My Vortec 7400 in my C3500 is 290hp/440/tq, and its plenty fast, and pulls like a motherfker, but 10mpg is...well, ouch.
A diesel, tends to get better mpg's...at least the owners always brag about getting 18+ or whatever.

My 2003 dirtymax gets a fairly consistent 14.5-15.5 no matter how I drive around town. I have calculated a true 21.5mpg cruising at 65 on the highway for an tx ended period of time (new Orleans to Houston)

I'll ask around about that at work today.

The OP was close with the quote.
Its:
Great motor, with a turd wrapped around it.
I also have a '87 2500 12 valve Dodge longbed that is fun to play around with.
Mixed driving it gets around 18-19 mpg, 21 on the highway with a hand shaker, but you have to try to get that MPH.
It feels, rides, drives like a tank.

People at work say that is unusual for your truck. You should be getting at least 20 on the highway without a tune.

Not on a new one, at least not in stock form. Emmissions have taken their toll.

It gets better over time. A tune can make a drastic improvement.

My '10 is a 4x4 with just over 20k on the clock, so that probably detracts from the mileage.
What kind of tuner should I be looking at? I dropped a K&N air filter in it, but am afraid to cut off all the emissions crap for fear of having warranty work denied. I didn't see any point in putting a cold air intake on it, considering that all that air has nowhere to go

Cold air relocaters are not necessary the stock setup will flow more then enough air. I think h&s are the best for the newer years.
