I don't want to be the "in my day" guy
but when I went through boot camp (8.5 weeks, Coast Guard, 11 years ago) I was able to make 2 phone calls home. One halfway through, which was timed to 5 minutes, and the second the day before we graduated.
My brother is in Air Force boot camp, and according to his wife's Facebook, he has called home every week, sometimes at least twice a week. for 30 minuntes.
WTF.

My daughter was allowed to take her cell phone to BMT. They were locked up and they earned the privledge to use them. Few things more motivating to a teenager than getting the use of their cell phone and hearing a familiar voice at the other end.
You gotta change with the times, my friend.
Old age.....you just never feel it coming.

Communication is much cheaper these days. I'm sure "in my day" it wasn't so much that the 2 calls was done out of control more so as a way to control expense.

Dude, USMC bootcamp for 13 weeks. Got to make one call when we got there just to say we were still alive and got to make one more about 2/3 of the way through to tell them we were STILL alive. I remember guys that couldn't reach anyone with tears in their eyes. But that's how it was and we liked it darn it! We LIKED it! Kids now a days.

When my Cousin went off to Paris Island his dad made him sit down and speak to my Dad. (USMC retired and an Ex Drill instructor). My Cousin had a major attitude problem. Dad leaned over and said "Listen Azzhole I can make your life a living hell" He had a very impolite answer to my Dad.
So two weeks into Boot camp Dad had his secretary mail him a love letter and a pair of Panties the size of a tent.
Two weeks after that he sent a letter to the DI claiming to be his mother and said "I had not gotten a single letter from him."
I guess you can figure out how much fun he had.

Things have changed. I hear the shit the privates agre getting to do now and it floors me. Things have changed since I showed up at Sand Hill in Ft Benning 20+ years ago for sure.
I hear the runs are now done in tennis shoes...lame.
They probably don't get yelled at ny more either...that would be insensitive...

I have heard that the recruits now get "stress cards" to show the DI's if they get too upset about being yelled at. Don't know if it's true, but wouldn't suprise me.
