View Full Version : Lost a cat last night...

I went walking this morning and found Bandit on the road. He'd been hit by a car. The road is 600' feet from my house, and the cats have 20 acres to roam on--why do they do this? This is only the third cat I've lost that way in 25 years. All of the others have died from old age.

I brought Bandit and showed him to his brother, Smokey, and to the other cats. That's neccesary to end their confusion about what happened to him, particulary Smokey. Smokey stared at Bandit a long time, then finally walked away. He's needed a lot of attention today. I gave Bandit a proper burial and asked God to please take him.

:sadangel: Bandit grew up on here. :sadangel:

That he did. I'm feeling kinda down tonight, and I appreciate all your condolences. I do my best to teach all my kitties to stay away from the road. If they try to follow me to the mail box, I chase them back to the house. Pretty soon all of them don't even try to follow me. Cats are adventurous, of course, and they take chances.

I know you're right. Perhaps this is a lame excuse, but I save a helluva lot more than I lose. My former ferals used to face danger and hunger every day of their lives. Now they are relatively safe, healthy, and loved. But I just can't keep 10+ cats inside.

I feel fortunate to have never hit a cat or dog.

Saw a cat get hit. It was awful because it wasn't killed, just badly injured. Long story short, I called the police because cars were literally swerving around it as it crawled around. The officer and I put him in a box and I drove with him to the city animal shelter, where they put him down. Then I went home and cried. It was horrible. :(

Luckily, the officer was obviously an animal lover. He was going to take him to the shelter himself, but it was a shallow box and the cat was quite distressed. I hopped in his car and we drove it over to the shelter together. It was late at night and I called it in as a road hazard, which was the truth. Otherwise, LAPD doesn't generally go on calls just because an animal is hit. But the officer was thankful that I had called it in.

It was really heartbreaking. :nonod:

I can still feel it like I was in the car when it happened.
It was unavoidable which doesn't help you feel any better.

I've never run over an animal...well, except a squirrel, but they have suicidal tendencies anyway...but that had to be a horrible feeling. I'd feel the same way, but it wasn't your fault. :yesnod:

:sadangel: No one wants to wipe out pets on the road, but you can't be very old, over the decades, I guess I have wiped out/hit/ran over some 6-10 animals....from a COW to a deer, to some dawgs and was accused of running over a cat and squirrel too......

I dunno if I posted this little happening here or not, but 1/2 a century ago I got to drive Mom to the grocery store on Saturday summer break....give Dad a break too.....so we on our 15 mile one way country road drive, and some 3 dawgs run out into the road, I swerve to avoid, car in ditch, overhanging tree, wiped out A pillar on Mom's side, her head into windshield, and so I learned the hard way.....and that included the COW......

never swerve, or hit the brakes.....sorry to hear about your cat, Spence.....

damn shame....I get arm rubs ever night from BO, but because he has LONG legs and BIG ears, his full name here is Bo Geekus.....

Becka and I were coming home from dinner one night. Saw the car in front of us run over a cat. Actuallu saw the cat bounce underneath the car. Of course we pullled over and I saw the cat on the side of the road looking like it was still alive. This was in January...snow on the ground and the cat was white. Went over to check on it and the cat put two fangs into my index finger, jumped up and ran away.
Long story short, I ended up in the ER where the doctor said if I could not locate the cat within 48 hours things could get dicey. Started rabies shots that night. Went through the entire course over the next 2 months.

My cat resuce kit now consists of a .22 revolver and a trash bag

My wife found a kitten lying next to the curb one July 4th when we lived in VA. We took the little girl home nursed her back to health, had to feed her with an eye dropper. Our oldest Aussie at the time adopted her and helped keep her warm and alive. He would breath his hot breath on her all the time and followed her around like a little nanny.
The day we were suppose to bring her in for neutering, she jumped out of the dog door and went out on the main road. She was a foot from the side of the road when she got hit by a car. We had her for 3 months and it broke our hearts to see this happen.

Sorry for your loss Larry. :sadangel::sadangel:

Thank you, peeps. You condolences and wishes are very much appreciated. As hard as it is to lose a kitty, it's harder to leave them in the wild where their odds of living are not good at all. Some researchers once said that feral cats live only about 3 years if they stay in the wild. Most of mine have lived 12+ years. And they're never been hungry a day since I've had them.

Thank you again. BTW, I'm a little bleary-eyed today from one too many gin and tonics last night.

Even a tame animal will bite you if you try to pick it up when it's in pain...simply because you're hurting it. The smallest kitty or dog can bite your hand down to the bone. Welding gloves are the way to go. Leather work gloves aren't tough enough to prevent bites. Don't ask me how I know....

Yes, I do feel like I let him down. I know that all pets are safest inside, but there's just too many of them. Plus, my track record of them being safe her is pretty good. However I say it, though, it sounds like rationalization.

Thank you for your kind words.

You have nothing to feel bad about!!! Former ferals can't be kept in a house 24/7. John and I had this discussion when KitKat and TurboKittyLucy adopted us. They come inside but they would rather be outside. We have lots of land for them but there is also a major road in the front of our house. Luckily I have never seen them venture out toward the road. I worry more that a coyote or hawk will eat them.

RIP my little Bandit:sadangel:

Hey Spence, spotted this thread again, busy day today, kinda krazy....

and so to note that my krazy BO cat jumped my ass not just twice, between 4-8 am this AM.....I get up to drain a lizard, and he jumps on my arms to gimme a rub down, but this AM it was 4X not the typical 1-2 X

does make me wonder what he knows, only cat I have even had that comes up and shoves his wet nose into mine, especially when I am crashing at night.....totally weird behavior.....:sadangel::leaving:
