View Full Version : Picked up a new daily driver..

Looking at taking a new job with a bit more of a commute and wanted something that got better gas mileage than my Trailblazer..
So picked up a 2004 Audi A4, 1.8t, Quattro, 6 speed. It does need some work, already did the thermostat, and have a vacuum leak I'm chasing down but for the price I couldn't pass it up. It has the Ultrasport package (previous owner kept the 18" rims - bastard), but for $3,500 it was worth it. Body and interior are near perfect..
Once I get the vacuum leak done, let the mods begin.. LOL

105,000.. Not bad for an 8 year old car.. but looking at the interior, under the hood and the body you wouldn't know it..
Good luck with your out of warranty Audi!

Good luck with your out of warranty Audi!
All of my cars are out of warranty.. and have had fewer issues with our daughters 2001 Audi than my 2005 Trailblazer...
I just don't want to deal with any car payments..
But I wouldn't have bought it if I couldn't work on it myself..

Not with this one,, but there are some behind the barn..

It's amazing how fast high end cars depreciate. 3500$ for what, a 40K new car? Good buy, I hope you don't have to buy many parts! OUCH! :seasix:

I work with a few Audi enthusiasts and they seem to be as dedicated to those cars as we are to Vettes. That seems like a heck of a steal.

Make sure you change the timing belt / chain (not sure what it has). The front end is known to need some attention on those, but other than the 2 above mentioned items, you should be good to go for quite a while.
$3500 is a heck of a deal. I would buy that in a heart beat for the $$$.

According to Kelley Blue Book you made a killing. :seasix:
Yes I did, I kept looking at the car wondering what I was missing.. and other than him (original owner) keeping the original 18" rims it's in near perfect shape.
Make sure you change the timing belt / chain (not sure what it has). The front end is known to need some attention on those, but other than the 2 above mentioned items, you should be good to go for quite a while.
$3500 is a heck of a deal. I would buy that in a heart beat for the $$$.
Original Owner said the timing belt was down, but I don't know the mileage. I will probably do it in the spring just to be safe. Did the daughters '01 A4 and it's not that bad.

I like it, not sure if I'll put factory rims back on or go aftermarket, but it definitely needs something wider.
Got the car up and running last night, had already changed the the thermostat, but still had the rough idle (lean condition, random misfire on all 4 cylinders) and traced it back to a vacuum leak. Replaced the entire PCV components from cylinder block to pressure relief valve on the valve cover.
Here is what came out..
http://www.johnwizphoto.com/images/Audi A4 USP_12.JPG
The block breather was brittle and came out in pieces, it was also cracked going into the PCV valve (T-shaped one) also the pipe going from the PCV up to the elbow for the PRV was broken off (multiple vacuum leaks), so replaced all that.
http://www.johnwizphoto.com/images/Audi A4 USP_13.JPG
http://www.johnwizphoto.com/images/Audi A4 USP_15.JPG
Cleared the codes and the car is running perfect, smooth idle and no codes. I need to total up the parts, but probably around $250 or so and got the car running great. If I couldn't do the work myself, the car probably wouldn't have been worth it, but definitely am happy with it. The engine compartment was as clean as my Vette with half the miles (and is garage kept).
Now bring on the mods.. LOL:drivingskid:
It's no Vette, but looking forward to trying it on some snow..

Well over the past few months been tinkering with my DD... It's actually been very reliable and easy to work on..
Ditched the stock exhaust..

And the stock brakes sucked..

and of course a little preventative maintenance, timing belt/water pump.

Now just trying to decide on just going with a tune or bigger turbo.. LOL

Do you have to pull the motor to change out the belt? I can't tell either that or you took off the front of the car! How many hours did that take? :willy:
Looks good, what's the running total? German parts are a killer $$$ wise. :ack:

Those wheels really work well with it.
Nice job again on getting such a killer deal on it.

Yes...
Bingo. Let's see what that 100K + bottom end will handle.
Hell, I'm sure Audi used forged internals on an FI car. As long as those bearings are up to the task; let 'er rip as long as you get a conservative tune and keep the boost at a safe number.
I'm sure some of the Audi guys on the boards can help you dial in a safe # that will still greatly improve the power.

Thanks,, figured after some of the comments in the initial thread I'd do an update.

Didn't have to pull the motor, just the bumper and front service carrier. Took about 7 hours total. It was the second one I did (did my daughters too). Total is about $4500 or so, including the Stoptech BBK and other parts.
Looks like you spent more on mods than you paid for the car.:leaving: A bit, considering what I paid, I didn't mind spending some more than I would have. The brakes were an indulgence , the stock ones were bad, when you step on the brakes it was more like a suggestion. Not a good feeling commuting into Crystal City.
Feck that looks really nice John :yesnod:

Scott Thanks, appreciate that. It's a fun little toy, and not too bad to work on.

LMAO, that's been my thought. Will probably just do a mild tune, if the motor does go.. then we'll see about something else.. LOL
Nice progress. Are those VMR's?
Yes they are, VMR 701s. I see lots of 710s and wanted something different. Also nice that the stock Audi center caps fit.
Those wheels look sick! That looks like it should have come that way. The car originally had a 9 spoke 18" that the original owner kept. I really liked the way they filled the wheel wells compared to the 5 spokes. So went with these.

Nice. VMR makes good products at reasonable prices. Tony aka C5SilverBullet recently got a set for his 535i. I was looking at their V705 for my mustang but the offsets didn't work on the 19x10 for the rear and i wasn't gonna run a 8.5 width all around. I found a similar wheel though so I'm happy.

If i were you i would lurk on audizine.com for a used turbo setup. Check out VWVortex's classifieds too. Those are two pretty good resources for the 1.8T and 2.0T mills.:yesnod:
Car looks awesome.:cert:
