High school valedictorian denied diploma over graduation speech | The Lookout - Yahoo! News (http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/lookout/valedictorian-denied-diploma-speech-hell-134805221.html)

An Oklahoma high school valedictorian who used the word "hell" in her graduation speech in May has yet to receive her diploma.
Kaitlin Nootbaar graduated from Prague High School with a 4.0 grade point average, her father, David Nootbaar, told KFOR-TV (http://kfor.com/2012/08/18/46913/). But school administrators told him that Kaitlin would have to submit a written apology in order to get her diploma.
"We went to the office and asked for the diploma and the principal said, 'Your diploma is right here but you're not getting it. Close the door, we have a problem,'" David Nootbaar told the network.
"She worked so hard to stay at the top of her class," he said. "This is not right."
In her speech—inspired by a similar address in "Eclipse: The Twilight Saga"—Kaitlin recounted how annoying it is to be constantly asked what she wants to do as graduation approached. "How the hell do I know?" she said, according to her father. "I've changed my mind so many times."
In the version she submitted to the school for approval, "hell" was "heck." But in the version she delivered at graduation, "hell" it was.
The school declined to comment. "This matter is confidential and we cannot publicly say anything about it," Prague schools Superintendent Rick Martin said in a statement to KFOR.

Really?

Don't put in heck and say hell.

Seems they did the right thing going public with it.
A few zillion angry calls oughta change some minds.

And the girl needs to demand an apology from the school for such nonsense.

Guess she'll learn actions have consequences.

Yea, graduating with a 4.0 will do that to ya....

I predict that no apology will be coming from the school. Although I see Oddball's point about such asinine behavior by the school, the girl did misrepresent what she would say in her speech. "Make very few promises, but keep every one you make."

They should have just done a Penn State on her. The salutatorian becomes the new valedictorian, and everybody else moves up one rank.

No, seriously, the school ****ed up. Can I say that? ****? No, I guess not. I'll wait until I give a speech, then.

Do you really think she was trying to pull something? Do you really think saying "hell" at a high school graduation should warrant this kind of response?

$10 says she wrote what she meant and just flubbed it on delivery.

There's no way of knowing why she did it. My gut says that she thought it would be cool to say Hell.

I predict that no apology will be coming from the girl. A local attorney will take the case, and unless they can prove that she gave the submitted speech verbatim except for that word, they have no standing. In addition, it’s just bad PR.

The school is the one acting juvenile and childish. A simple meeting in the office letting her know that the administration did not appreciate her modification of the speech would have sufficed. She appears smart enough to get it.

"Make very few promises, but keep every one you make."

This is true and a good way to live, but let the punishment fit the crime.

I agree, and can the school tell an adult that is no longer a student, what they can and cannot say in public?

I bet she could find one on the internet she could copy/paste to them. :D

'dear principal meat head,

i'm sorry i changed my speech when i delivered it and replaced 'heck' with 'hell'. it won't happen again because i'm never going to darken your crummy corridors with my presence. i was insensitive to the audience members who may have been offended by such strong language, language that is regularly broadcast on major networks and published in newspapers and magazines of wide distribution. since candy assed people have to be coddled to while on your sacred grounds, it would be best for all to cancel any future speeches not given by you directly.

oh, i really did enjoy reading Dante's work.

love,

We had a valedictorian at my graduation use some choice words, but said them in Spanish, what the exact words were I don't know, but they were along the lines of racial slurs to anybody other than being Spanish. They actually held his diploma till January of the next year. He ended up losing all his scholarships and wasn't able to start his college career till a year after we did. This case though seems like total B.S.

1. I'm from Oklahoma like the student.
2. I graduated with a 4.0+ GPA and was a valedictorian
3. I would tell the principal and everyone else who got pissed to go F themselves.

You want to give shit to a successful student for saying "hell?" Give me a break. The school administrators should focus on real problems like the piss poor education most of their students are getting.

I'm guessing this student will be just fine with or without her worthless piece of paper.

She graduated, and can go on to college, they just wont let her have a copy of the diploma? so what? :island14:

Have her lawyer pick up a copy under the freedom of information act maybe? :island14:

She should tell them no F'king way will she apologize! :toetap:

Freedom of speech? saying damn, or hell wont even get you banned on CF

I like how some of the people here who scream about personal responsibility are now making exceptions like those the criticize. :funny:

She said hell. Not ****,*****,dick,**** or anything remotely obscene. If my memory is correct, when I went to church a long time ago, the Preacher must have used the words hell and damnation at least 50 times a Sunday.

Yes, but the Preacher was talking about the location, he wasn't swearing.

Granted....hell is about as "soft" a cuss word as you can have...but the point is she turned in a speech where she said "heck", and instead said "hell". It seems the simple fact that she had to turn in her speech ahead of time meant it had to be approved...they approved it as received, and she changed it mid-sentence.

Do I think it's silly on the school's part? You betcha...but in this case I see their point.

Just look up how many times school districts have been sued for things said at a graduation.

They have every right to control what is and is not said at a school function.

And this is why I didn't speak at my graduation or my senior awards assembly where they presented the valedictorian award. Hell (Oh no! Bad word!), I didn't even attend the awards assembly where they asked me to give a speech about the teacher(s) that motivated me the most.

For most top students, high school is a joke. I didn't bust my ass to get all A's. I showed up, did what I was expected to do, and that's it. The faculty and staff like to make high school prom, graduation, etc... into this major life event. It's not. It's almost irrelevant. How many people have graduated from high school? 300+ million. Yep, that's something special!!!

I felt the same way about college where I graduated with distinction. Did I bust my ass? Not really. The most memorable time for me in college was during my graduation ceremony. This was only for the business college and it took several hours for all the people to walk across the stage. As I was sitting in my chair I thought to myself, "You haven't accomplished anything yet. Look around. You're one of hundreds who just got a college degree. This same ceremony is going on at hundreds of colleges around the U.S. where hundreds of other students are getting their degree. This same thing happens every year. You're one of thousands. You're not special."

What you do AFTER school is what counts. I hope this girl uses this stupid decision to light a fire under her ass and accomplish great things.

K, the school wants a written apology and then they will hand over the diploma. If I were her, this is what I'd do...

Get a Post-It note and a pencil

Write this...

Dear School,

Sorry.

Kthxbye,

Kaitlin

Also, how many times was the word "hell" printed in the required reading books that the school district administered? I bet quiet a few.

When I was in school, Slaughter House Five, The Diary of Anne Frank, Milton and others were required reading.
