I just have to surround it with the fire wood, and It'll be good to go..
.22, .38, .45, and .357 calibers will be all this sees...
I'm still waiting for my NYS pistol permit though...6 ½ months, now.....:banghead:

You really should have a secondary backstop. Another frame filled with sand would suffice.

Ummmm.....what's behind the bunch of trees?

That wood won't stand up to anything like .357 or larger magnum rounds, at least not for long. You may want more reinforcement to hold it upright as well. Just an idea...you'll find out quick enough. :cert:

Aren't ranges built into a berm or hill side for safety?

I'll pile firewood behind it....

Not good enough. Be a responsible firearm owner and do it right. Your backstop with be compromised after a few hundred rounds. The firewood behind it will be too. Projectiles will pass thru.

So what's downrange? Would you feel comfortable if your house was downrange of this backstop?

This has "wavy roof" potential...

Maybe add another layer of RR ties verticle would be sufficient.

:iagree:

IMO, I'd feel VERY uncomfortable if that was all there was between MY house and a shooter.

A couple of substantial dirt/sand berms behind the backstop would ease the apprehension, somewhat.

Tell us there is nobody living in the line of fire.

In my opinion, what OP built was a "target frame." In order to qualify as a proper backstop, you need a dirt mound or something substantial. It's also not big enough. In order to be a proper backstop it needs to be wide enough to cover many contingencies. Just because you think you are a good shot doesn't mean you won't have a flyer go to the left or right of your backstop.

Horizontally. Add another layer of ties in the front ( 12" to 15" forward) , build a wall on each side and fill with sand. End of safety problem.

How about a huge pile of Dirt on sides and behind it. Post this in CF and see the leftys loose their collective mind...

Smart move. Had to bust your balls since it was serious safety flaw in your design. It's not always the high percentage flaws that bite you.

First off- :cert: on having your own mini range
But please add dirt berms to the side & behind. Dirt is cheap, make it at lease, if not higher, than your wood backstop. Add dirt of same height on both sides to at least 6 feet left & righ (at the least)t. Cover with sod (to reduce erosion).
Be very careful who you allow to utilize your range & always be present... I've seen too many retards whom I thought were intelligent until a weapon was placed into their hands.
Enjoy

Especially when King Canadia comes to visit you someday and you teach him how to shoot from the hip. :D

I have a range on my property.(I live in a very rural town on the shore of a large lake) It’s a maximum of a 100 yards. I use a heavy picnic table for a platform at the maximum distance, and off to the side I have a few bench seats set up at 50yars 25yards and 50’ to hold ammo/ guns and whatever as the shorter rangers are all shot off hand.

My back stop is a homemade heavy-duty shelf about 4’ square with the bottom about 3’ off the ground. I fill it with cut logs and branches of different diameters. It makes a great back stop as the spaces between the logs/branches seem to upset the bullets quite well and when they hit the next piece their deformed and tumbling and stop easily.

I or whoever I allow to shoot can normally keep all rounds in the wood backstop. That is my wish as I want all rounds stopped there. I replace wood as necessary and have a impressive collection of slugs that stopped in my backstop.

About 25’ behind my back stop is a mountain that raises about 800’ so if anything does miss or go through it “aint’ going far. As of the laws of today here in the people’s republic of NY I’m legal to shoot as the only law that covers my property is a DEC law about firing closer to 500’ from a occupied dwelling unless you have permission.

I only have 1 close neighbor, his camp is just at the 500’ point, but he only come up a couple of weekends in the summer. Even without the law I would not shoot when he is there due to the noise factor, I have plenty of other time to shoot.

You never know where pets, animals, and wayward children are playing. AND, newbies jerking the trigger can result in wild shots! :ack:......

I am not a structural engineer and I have not been approving building and garage designs that people post on the interweb, unlike those experts on other forums. :leaving:

But I would question the design as others mentioned...way to take their advice and make it better. :) :cert:

I like the dirt idea...several berms to the sides and either behind or infront of the wood would make me feel a whole lot better.

Just make sure the shooting backstop is in front of your least favorite neighbors... :yesnod:

Or possibly right behind it would be an excellent place to build a home for your mother in law :D

Na....I've been really busy lately......Now that everything is settling down though, I'll get to working on it.
I think that I may move it behind the barn where there is an easy 100 yards, sloping ever so slightly down hill.... Then at around 120 yards, there is a hill which rises about 30', that would be a natural back stop.... It is as wide as my property....I gotta get a couple of machines back there to clear it though. I could then cut a large doorway into the back of the barn, and have a nice little range. Time and money.....That's all.
