Can this option be changed so a clicked link posted within a thread opens a new tab/window (_blank in HTML speak) and does not replace this site as the origin tab/window?

OK, this doesn't seem to be consistent. I found other threads containing links, and they worked as expected (they opened in a new tab).

This was the one that caused me to post this thread:

Clicking Rob's link in the above thread replaces this site with DC (within the same tab).

Why does it act different?

yup same here and that has been the only link that has done it to me too..
