My mom had one in her late teen years...she said that the Ghia was the most fun car she had owned until dad bought her the 86 GT 5.0 Mustang...

I always liked them. Nice part is that now, you hardly ever see them. Would be a very unique ride to modify. Never thought about it. Certainly be a blast to drop in an FI 4 or 6 to wake her up. I'll bet you could squeeze an older Porsche flat 6 in there.

I thought about this one. The price wasn't too bad.

You can certainly build a stout Type IV. Lots of after market parts to adapt those.

Would be a fun project for weekends if I had the time. I restored a couple P 914s in the late 80s that I got for peanuts.
Used to work with a guy named Bob in Lodi, NJ (European Perf Center) Guy was in the race circuit with a few of his 914 6s and he fabbed up some bad azz rides.
Always wished I could have afforded one of them back in the day. Very fun cars that were pretty quick due to their low weight. Awesome what 100 bhp can do.

I saw one with a Corvair engine in it once at a car show. It had air conditioning, too.

Been eyeing this one.. He dropped the price recently. $1900 OBO and he's motivated due to the motor being shot.

Too bad about the rust, but still not a bad deal. Used engines are pretty easy to find on craigslist.

As far as Ghias go, I prefer the Ghia Supersonic...

... and the Ghia Cadillac...

... but not all of Ghia's designs are as lovely as all those. Their Ferraris aren't the best lookers...

Don't buy a Karmann Ghia, they are just an expensive type1 beetle and full of bondo (since there are no replaceable fenders.

I used to work at a VW shop back in the 90's. believe me...nothing special.

Oh and what's the fascination with lowered (slammed) cars. I dislike the look. mainly because when I was turning wrenches, it meant it would have more suspension and undercarriage damage, have no useable suspension travel, and was harder to get a jack under it.

The type 3's were actually a much higher quality car (and more expensive to buy I'm sure). The f.i. ran ok if you know how to keep them adjusted, but i don't know if you can really get much in the way of spare parts anymore. The later 70's f.i. was a lot more serviceable than the early D-Jetronic.

I wouldn't mind gettin' my paws on of the them first-gen., 1974–1982 VW Scirocco's, too. They were the Ghia's replacement, you know.
