View Full Version : Split tree limbs
What is the black stuff you "paint" on the exposed limbs/trunk to try and preserve it after limbs spift from it?
I think there is some kind of tape/wrapping you can also use.
Any help is appreciated.
BTW - I know it's all just a stop-gap and we'll eventually lose the tree.

I don't know what the black stuff is called, but everything I read several years ago said it was a waste of time, that it's just for appearance.

It may depend on the type/age of the tree. i know i've cut limbs off of several of my Oak and Willow trees over the years and done nothing, and so far no problems. I think maybe the black stuff is to keep new twigs from sprouting there.

Googled it - some answers here:
If you cut a limb off a tree, do you need to put something on the cut portion or leave it bare? - Yahoo! Answers (http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20070824163153AAbFQ7Q)

From the Agricultural Extension Service:
The current thinking is that these products (pruning paint or wood dressing) could increase the potential for rot by trapping moisture under the sealant. The best procedure is to make the cut at the collar where the branch meets the trunk and leave the cut area bare. The collar area contains natural chemicals to protect the trunk from invasion by insects and disease. If insects seem to be invading the cut area, then an insecticide can be applied.
Ask Extension :: Should I put pruning paint on a recently pruned limb? (http://www.askextension.org/questions/338/Should+I+put+pruning+paint+on+a+recently+pruned+limb%3F)
I'll add that if you prune in the Winter, when the tree is dormant, your chance of hurting the tree is greatly reduced, and disease vectors are not present.

I just spray paint the cut, have been doing that for many years.
Thanks.
I guess we'll save the $$ for stump removal.

Yep my tree got hit a few weeks ago and a huge limb came off.
Mom said just leave it. Mom's know everything.
