I own a 94 Silverado. It's the second vehicle I've ever owned. I bought it because my first truck was stolen. I purchased it in early 1999. It's got 240,000 miles, the windshield is cracked, the display on the radio doesn't work, the drivers seat has a slight lean, yesterday I saw a spot on the hood where the clear coat is coming off (which pisses me off because the hood was repainted about 3 years ago), and the dash now has cracks in it. It doesn't sound like it, but the truck still looks pretty good for its age.

All that being said, I drive it 99% of the time even though I bought a nice 06 Silverado 2 or 3 years ago. I doubt I've put 5,000 on the newer truck in that time.

All my friends think I'm crazy for still driving the old truck, but I just like it. After seeing the paint issue today, I started to think maybe it's time to retire it from daily use.

Anyone else like this?

Um, yeah.

I have my vette parked in the garage ( first car I bought, my second car). I finally after a long time got rid of my '95 Lincoln Mark VIII that was parked for a few, my '06 Trailblazer, finally got my '99 Taurus on the road.

The only cars I've ever sold was my first hand me down Monte Carlo and just recently I traded the Lincoln and the Trailblazer on a new ride. I'm almost 40 :willy:

If it works and you like it, why sell it? My friends think I'm nuts that I drive a $500 car to work knowing full well that I have a $100k car in the garage.

If I feel like being speed racer, I drive the nice car, if I don't give fcuk, hoopty time.

Nope. And that practice has cost me a LOT of money over the years.

Most of my cars don't make it more than a few years before I get bored with them and move on to something else. We did thoroughly wear out an '88 Corolla FX/16 in the eight years we had it...longest so far.

This. And debt sucks, too. No car notes and don't want any. Saving up my money to pay cash for my next vehicle.

No car payments therefore not paying interest, excise tax goes down every year, every time you buy you pay sales tax. As long as the vehicle is running and not costing a large amount in repairs, I tend to keep and run them. If I need to go someplace where the vehicle I arrive in needs to make a statement, I rent one or call for a limo.

Several years ago when one of the sons was going to the prom, I rented the biggest Caddy I could find, donned my tux and assumed the role of the limo driver. Drove the two couples to the restaurant they had chosen, parked down the street in a McDonalds and grabbed a Big Mac. When they were finished with their dinner I drove back, picked them up and drove them to the prom. The prom was an all night thing so I picked them up in the AM and delivered each home.

What a nice thing to do.

I tend to keep my vehicles for a very long time (10-15 years) and have never put one over 100k miles. They were all old when I got them too. In 87 I sold a 1977 to buy a 1975... and had that land yacht for 12 years.

I like older cars and I like being debt free. Having 2 vehicles means that one of them is running and can get me to work if the other has to be in the shop.

3 years ago I sold a 1987 when I got my 14 year old 1996 vette. It's only in the last 9 months that I jumped into the 21st. century with a 2006.

So far, the vette has cost me @ $90.00 in repairs. The 2006 has cost $1700.00......

My plan works for me because I take care of them and don't drive them into the ground. Eventually I just get tired of them and want something different.

It's wishful thinking. I'm about as predictable as they come.

I bought the 06 so I would have a second vehicle if the 94 broke down. I take the 06 if I'm going out of town.

The 94 is a lot easier to work on too. I've been able to do 100% of the repairs in the past 5 or so years, which really haven't amounted to much. I had to change the temp gauge sensor, replace an alternator, and replace the HVAC fan because it was making noise.

You guys don't make me feel so bad now. Maybe I'll spend the $300-$500 to get the hood repainted. :seasix:

I drive 'em at least 10 years. They're still clean and sound even after that, but I just don't want to keep one so long that it needs constant repairing. So far, so good (knock on wood).

:seasix: That's not throwing stupid money at it and you'll feel better about being in it. With the care you put into it you'll be able to have it for many more years and still be able to sell it to some kid who will be able to afford it and have a great first car.

That's if there are any kids left whose parents don't throw a new Honda at them when they turn 16.....

Meanwhile you can spend some money on something that's more "fun" than car payments :yesnod:
