View Full Version : Rear ended without obvious significant damage....

This afternoon a distracted idiot drove into the back of our Infiniti G37 at a fairly good clip. We got out to check the damage and...were shocked to find almost nothing. There were some minor scratches and the license plate frame was bent, but the bumper must have deformed and rebounded. The offending driver's VW Jetta came out about as well. I was really surprised. I expected to find the trunk pushed up.
Here is the question...
We are not interested in dealing with this any further. I am not concerned about minor scratches on the bumper and have no interest in filing a claim, getting anything fixed, or devoting any or our precious time to this minor fender bender....that said, I am wondering about the structural integrity of the bumper.
Thoughts? Did the impact compress padding which will now be unable to diffuse an impact in the future? Should this be inspected or replaced? I would rather leave it, but do not want to compromise safety or protection going forward.

it probably crushed the stuff underneath. I would get it looked at by the infinity body shop at least. My wife's new Lexus Gx 460 was backed into in the school parking lot by a crazy bitch in a suburban (because the left the scene, but that is another story). It ruined the bumper and mashed all kinds of stuff underneath. Total was $1700 or so for everything new and replaced.
Bottom line, get the underside checked out by someone who is familiar with it.

Probably good advice. I will take to Mark a/k/a MyBlueC5 from CF. He has a body shop around here and has done excellent work for us in the past. Bummer....was hoping to be done with this.
That said, I am impressed with how both cars held up. This was not a "tap." She hit us good and the cars and people came out okay. Some of us are a little sore, but will probably be fine.

Mark is a super good dude. His shop is in Indian Trail (Collision Specialties). I believe that he also opened a shop in Monroe. He has done great work for many folks from CF. He fixed up my Vette after I spun it off into the woods off of I-85 near Greensboro. He fixed my wife's car after a series of unfortunate incidents. It is nice to have a competent, honest, body shop in the area. One of the strengths of Mark's work is his pain...he is known for an excellent paint job.

I had the same thing happen to me once when I was real young.
I didn't see any damage so I let the dude go.
Behind the bumper there are some supports that crumble on impact and need to be replaced for "safety" reasons.
Once they take impact they have to be replaced as they are a one time thing.
Never got it fixed as I really didn't see any reason to do so.

I don't owe you anything unless you get money for me. That's what the commercials say.

When J backed into the vette with the explorer it didn't look too bad. The bodyshop showed us the impact foam and it had to be replaced along with the rear bumper cover. Did you know you didn't have to pay 2 deductibles when you run over your own car with your other car?
