UPDATED THREAD: http://www.thevettebarn.com/forums/off-topic/45740-official-br-iii-activities-suggestion-thread.html
Just FYI...
NCM has us blocked off for BR III for 5/23/2013—5/25/2013.
It's not on their web calendar of events, yet. That won't happen until we start building the calendar.
It's still early, so you won't be seeing a lot posted about it. Feel free to make some suggestions here about things you'd like to see added, removed or left on the calendar.

ugh...still recovering, bills to be paid.....feeling weak.....
i'd say having one 'thing' each day, with the evenings open, so peeps can catch up with friends over a cold drink is a good outline.
Dixievet doing the dinners right next to the gathering spot worked out very well, and i for one would be thrilled if he did that again (charge more next time, 15-20/mouth/night).

Whatever happened to switching the venue and date year to year?
http://www.thevettebarn.com/forums/off-topic/31641-i-have-legitimate-question-about-barn-raising-event-moving-forward.html
The event location already IS planned to rotate. That idea was born over a dining room table in Texas last year (which wasn't during Mem. day weekend btw).
And by no means is the date locked in either. When we saw that CF lost their NCM event, it made complete sense for us to seize that opportunity, which is exactly what we did.
Let's face it, the bulk of CI regulars were already accustomed to being there that weekend, to change the weekend would be unwise.
There has been no talk of BRIII just yet, but you can bet it will be a heavily-discussed topic at this year's event.
My personal opinion is that it should move to the middle east coast area next year, because after all, that is the location of the barn this forum was named after. (yes, the barn is a real place located in Suffolk, VA).
Of course we will try our best to do what most people want, so maybe it'll be elsewhere, it's anyone's guess at this point.
Pick any weekend between April and October, and there bound to be a conflicting event happening somewhere, and someone with personal schedule conflicts. That's just the way it is.
But as you noted, it's good reason not to keep it the same every year. :yesnod:

It's been tossed around in a few threads now. The consensus was to leave it in BG and keep it the same time of year, but possibly find an alternate hotel to stay at (Barren Lake or mammoth Cave Park, etc).

Bunch of people with a similar transportation-oriented interest are given maps or directions with varying degrees of specificity to go on a tour, with stops along the way where they get envelopes with playing cards. At the end of the run, the best hand wins.
Variations include "closest to true mileage" bonus, trivia questions from along the route to discard and redraw cards, etc.
Good times, and if I had been planning on bringing a street-legal car to BR I would have signed up for the run also.

I did not notice a signup for auto-x - I take it there was one for the poker run I didn't see?
On the NCM site, you only really "sign up" for those events for which there is an additional fee. The fee is paid and the NCM has a particiation count.
For the remainder of the events, such as autocross or the poker run, we have to take a count for the NCM and pass it on. This usually happens through posted threads here, asking for people to chime in on what they will be attending.
The biggest issue we have is that some folks just pass up those threads and don't bother answering. If people don't chime in, their intended participation for an event is not counted and we're forced to give the NCM a low number of participants. Then the event is cancelled due to lack of interest.
This year, I believe we are going to try something a little different. The idea is to have a list of ALL the scheduled events and ask everyone to check off what they are attending. This will at least give us a list of people to PM for verification of attendance for events. It's easier to shoot out a PM to those you know are interested, then to hope everyone participates in a thread.

Marcus said he might teach a detailing class next year. Those bringing their cars (and anybody else for that matter!) could raffle off a chance for THEIR car to be the car that gets the full detailing job on it.
well, i made cutting board for Dixievet as a thanks for his hard work cooking, and IC got a new ban hammer, and i had 3 other projects that were due by the time BR II happened, so i kind of ran out of time to think up and make anything for an auction.

I got tired just watching the kid go at it for car after car. Good thing I had a chair and an adult beverage to keep me from getting totally exhausted!:D

We'll do the 50/50 this year. One thing we'll need (to get some sales going for the 50/50 drawing) are some donations of prizes. So, if anyone has any ideas for prizes or has anything they would like to donate, feel free to send me a PM.
I had a prize with me :yesnod: I'll have something next year also.

while i dont have a vette, i would like to attend one of these barn raisings. I would also like the wife to attend, but her health isnt as good as it used to be. She doesnt have a problem with me attending, but it isnt the same. She used to talk to alot of folks on the other forum. I would like her to at least meet some of the folks she used to talk to. She dont party like we used to so thats another reason she doesnt want to attend. but... i got a whole yr to convince her otherwise. :D no promises . :cert:

You don't HAVE to make it a "high anxiety" thing, for either of you. She can come and enjoy what she wants, and go back to the room to relax, or whatever. Don't HAVE to be out there 24/7!!
Take your time, enjoy the ride, enjoy the camaraderie, enjoy the time spent with others that WILL enjoy YOUR time. You can spend as much (or as little) time with us as you'd like. BUT, be guaranteed, we WILL enjoy your (both of your) company!

I think we have enough people to take over either hotel. Barren Lake has water amenities & Mammoth Cave Hotel puts us into a different area to explore caves, distilleries and Fort Nox. :D I also like the Suffolk, VA suggestion. What sort of lodging and amenities are available in that area?
Chris, i'm Pretty sure both of those (mammoth cave and barren lake) are in dry cities/counties-but i could be wrong. If they are, then likely no beer trailer. Not that it matters to all, but i know it's mighty important to a lot of the group. I can find out for sure if needed.
I don't think any place will be found that will take better care of the group (as a whole) than Michael at the hampton does. JMO, (and i may be a bit biased because he's a friend of mine), but he knows what to expect and welcomes it. Most places would not be nearly as tolerant, especially if they haven't had the group before.

Good point. I hadn't considered that. What if your hotel was the main hotel? Could a beer trailer be brought to it?

They have tolerated a lot over the years. I'm guessing they may have had a few complaints from people who may or may not have been towing boats around a corner to find their parking lot filled with people and chairs. They also let us there whether we were staying in their hotel or not. I stayed at the Motel 6 this year. Lots of places would require you to be registered with them or they would kick you to the curb.

As much as we'd love to have it here Chris, we only have 25 rooms total.
We usually have a few to stay with us anyway since we're only a few minutes away (and we really appreciate it), but i think the event is bigger than us --by a long shot. I never did hear the final count on rooms at the Hampton this year but i think it was around 100 give or take. Ya can't beat Michael's place for that many:seasix:
That gives me 355 days to come up with a vette!! I won't be missing next year, and with God willing, have another vette to show up in!!:cert:

maybe one night this year we give dixie a break and do a crawfish boil.
I'll bring one down from up North to throw in. We call 'em lobsters.
I really like this idea. Perhaps the whole "Steak-Off" routine has run its course and it would be good to change things up a bit. How about a crawfish/crab/lobster boil for Saturday night?
I think it might also be nice to invite the Hampton staff (Michael and desk crew) as a "thank you" for all their hospitality over the years.

Just an update on a possible idea. We were in BG last week for the museum's Dagon run and made a quick stop at Jim Beam. They have their new gift shop open - two stories, the old gift shop is the tasting room - they use the vending machine concept though and you only get two tastes, but the best part is they now have a real tour of the distillery and also a new small batch/test operation where they make batches as small as one barrel to try out new ideas. They also have a new small batch bottling line where there is a spot where you can fill your own bottle - I'm not sure on all the details of how that works as it was not up and running yet. The tour is about 90 minutes long and will be $8/person (it was free when we were there as they will still training the tour guides). Having done the whole bourbon trail, I would consider Beam to be one of the best places now, very comparable to Maker's in that you see the whole process. The tasting room is not as good as Maker's but you can taste any two of their products, even the premium lines.

Should be easy if the weather cooperates. Drive up to the spot, shoot wide, close, owner gets out and stands alongside the car then moves along for the next person to pull up. :seasix:

Yeah, I'd like to do that - and definitely Maker's Mark again, but only if it's like it was a few years ago - with the tastings and the awesome lunch and all that.
Opryland Hotel is a good suggestion too - and to tour the whole place is an ENTIRE day. That place is so dang big. But it is seriously awesome inside - maybe a half day there, they have some decent restaurants there, or just go next door to the Opry Mills Mall, and we all go to Chuy's. mmmmm, Chuy's. :cert::cert:

Yes, the Hampton will be extending the $94.00 rate again. The official dates are the May 23rd thru 25th. Michael is aware that there will be people arriving early (and staying later) and the rate will be good those days.

There will be no hotel promo code this year to enter online. Instead, Michael's instructions are as follows:
