Grab a beer...and no Googling!

1. Use the letters given to complete the square so the three other words can be read downwards and across.
What are the words?

C G N N O O O O W

http://i702.photobucket.com/albums/ww22/lspencer534/5-20puzzle.jpg

2. An airplane covers its outward journey at 560mph. It returns, over exactly the same distance at 420mph.
What is the airplane’s average speed over the entire journey?

3. What number should replace the question mark?

13 - - - 4
27 - - - 9
43 - - - 7
11 - - -?

4. Throw three darts at this board to score 20. Every dart hits the board and no dart falls out. How many different ways are there to score 20? (To eliminate guessing, you must post at least 3 of the combos.)

http://i702.photobucket.com/albums/ww22/lspencer534/5-20puzzle1.jpg

5. A fast train leaves London for Brighton. At the same time a slow train leaves Brighton for London. The fast train travels at 80 mph and the slow train travels at 35 mph. When the trains meet, which is farther from London? (Remember "elegant reasoning": The ability to find the answer in the fewest steps possible.)

Well then the Brighton train is still slightly farther away from London than the London train is.

Maybe I don't understand "Average"?

560 = .001786 hours per mile
420 = .002381 hours per mile

0.004167 hours per 2 miles

Maybe not rate, but speed is what was asked, not rate. M/h is a speed. All were given in the same units.

And just taking the reciprocal of one thing changes that dynamic?

I know! Still trying to wrap how one rate is not the right one, but the reciprocal of that rate is. Hours / mile is still a rate as well, just in a rate of time vs. speed. Isn't it?

You have to calculate the amount of time it took to go over a known distance, in this case, 2 miles. Once you know the hours to go 2 miles then obviously the SPEED is the inverse, ie, miles per hour.

Look at it this way. Get in a car and drive 60 miles per hour for one hour. You go 60 miles. Returning, you go the same 60 miles but you travel at 40 miles per hour. The return trip takes you 1.5 hours. So what is your average speed? It's NOT 50 miles per hour. You travelled 120 miles in 2.5 hours so the average speed is 48 miles per hour.

You can't average rates. You have to calculate the qualtities and use them to calculate the average rate.
