Will be there and wondering what to do. Is there anything to see besides the space needle?
Is the place just full of hippies and coffee shops?
Any places to go see?

The underground tour is pretty cool. The Space Needle is overpriced. Pike Place Market is sweet. The Aviation museum at Boeing Field is a must.
Go watch their pro basketball team... Oh, wait..............
It was stolen!

Go buy some Birkenstocks, rent a Subaru, and read a poem at a coffee shop. Save water by not showering. You'll fit in just fine.

Aviation museum sounds good. I am sure I can kick a hippie for fun.
Is that it?
Seattle must suck.

Seattle Art Museum usually has some sort of nice exhibit going on, fairly decently priced too! Near (walking distance) Pike Place Market. Near the middle of the market, across the street, there is a little shop that has THE best Pirogi's and Piroshki's (my fave!) you've ever tasted in your life! Great for a quick nibble between doing things! Lots of cool art shops in there too.
Downstairs at Pike Place is the brewery too, great food, awesome beer! Try their Kiltlifter, you will be a new fan!
Across the water is Salty's, an outstanding seafood restaurant, with seating overlooking the water, and the Seattle skyline. Gorgeous!
The Experience Music Project (Paul Allen's pet) is right next to the Pacific Science Museum, also a must see.
The Aviation Museum is also WELL worth the price of admission!!
As I think of more, I'll edit this post!

:iagree: Aviation Musuem is must see. Here's a thread with pics from last year.

Careful about kicking the hippie, though. It could be a Northwest hippie, not a transplanted Kalifornia hippie, in which case you'll have your head handed to you.

Actually we are going on a Disney Alaska cruise. We are going to fly in early and probably stay a few days later after the cruise returns and see some stuff.
I live in Houston, so it is not every day we are on the West coast.
Thanks for all the ideas.

First, go to Pike Place Public Market. It's a fun visit with lots of built-in entertainment. Watch the guys flipping big King salmon.
Second, try to get a reservation for the tour at the Boeing plant in Everett (about 1/2 hour north of downtown). It's a spectacular construction facility...the world's largest building and an assembly line where you can see roughly 10 airplanes being built in various stages of production.
Third, take a ferry over to Bainbridge Island for a nice lunch and walk. You'll get to experience what Puget Sound is all about.
Fourth, if you like Casino gambling, I'd recommend you go to the Muckleshoot (Indian) Casino in Auburn...I always found it the most pleasant. If you're there on the weekend, some of the entertainment isn't bad.
Fifth, try to see a play at the Seattle Reperatory Theatre...they have excellent productions and you may well recognize some of the actors. I saw Bill Irwin in two Beckett plays, Judd Hirsch in a wonderful one, Larry Fishburne and several other wonderful actors.
Sixth, if there is a performance by the Seattle Symphony, you'll really enjoy Benaroya Hall and the acoustics there. Similarly, don't miss the Opera if it's in town.
Seventh, stop by the University of Washington...it's a small city of 60,000 itself and has some great eateries in the University District. As it turns out, my son is finishing a M.Ed. there while my daughter is a prof in the UW Med School. U-Dub, as it's called, is one of the nation's finest research universities and a source of pride to nearly all alums.
Eighth, if the legislature is in session, you might visit the state capitol in Olympia, about 63 miles south of Seattle. When I lived up there, I got to meet my state senator, Leo Thorsness, who was an idol of mine when I was in the USAF in the late '60s...he was a fighter pilot who was awarded the Medal of Honor for an unbelievable mission the week before he was shot down on his 93rd Wild Weasel mission and spent nearly 6 years in the Hanoi Hilton. A wonderful gentleman and truly heroic American, who has since retired. WA's state capitol is modeled on the US capitol and watching the stiffs, er, legislators will give you an interesting view of the political process.
Ninth, if you go to Olympia, stop in Tacoma on the way back and eat at one of the restaurants on Commencement Bay...indeed, you may have a day with no rain and you can eat out on the deck over the bay.
Tenth, you can take the elevator up to the 73rd floor of the BofA tower in downtown Seattle for grab views. Unfortunately, the restaurant there is a private club (I used to have one of my offices in the building as I lived there).
Eleventh, and importantly, if you get there for Copper River Salmon season (only 3 weeks per year), you need to try some...it has a rich and truly distinctive flavor and is worth the price. I used to buy a lot of it and grill it in my back yard
There are a few ideas for some sight-seeing. If nothing appeals, PM me and I'll try to offer some more ideas.
Enjoy the visit...and the view of Mount Rainier, both while flying in and while you're there. Rainier is SouthEast of Tacoma but visible from all around and even across the sound.
Cheers,
Harry

I think that idea is finally squashed. I failed my medical because of the back surgery. I think I am going to be allowed to retire in December.
Work has sucked for a while. I finished my contract I was working with BP, so I had to switch hats and go into the business development role. I think I have landed a new contract with Petrobras (the brazillions :D) Just been busy.
Nice to know I have been (sorta) missed.
Thanks everyone for the ideas.

Biz development can be OK. My BIL retired after 20+ with USN (attack subs) and has been doing OK with a mil contractor. Brazil is definitely a country where the economy is on hyperdrive right now. A boatload of opportunities.

Seattle, Vancouver B.C., and Portland are amongst the most beautiful cities on the planet. A lot of that is simply because they're geographically blessed.

I did want to go, but that is another story.
The Z is sitting in the garage on the battery charger, ready to drive. I am about to move it to my father in laws house down the road because we are going to have some construction start on the garage extension and the pool
The retirement part: I hit 20 years a while back, but I was placed on the deployment manning document. That means that they would take me even though my contract ends in December. They would not keep me past the date, but I would have to do the 6 month train up and then deploy to AFG for 2 weeks or so and then they would send me back.
It is just not worth all the trouble to go and only stay for 2 weeks. Shit, I have stayed in Disney world for longer.
I will just be an old retired Master Sergeant who has a disdain for Faggotry, govt waste, dirt monkeys, and ugly people (I don't own a mirror).
I do like kingpins idea of the video in the coffee shop....I wonder if I can do it in in the original starbucks?
