View Full Version : How do you polish plastic?

I have a 3" x 4" black plastic emblem that goes on my El Camino's steering wheel horn pad. There are no deep scratches at all, just 25 years of wear and dullness. Can I use paint polishing compound followed by wax (and then a clear coat?)? Or do I need to buy a plastic polishing kit? If so, anybody have any leftovers?

Got a pic of it? Is the plastic emblem a plastic paint type of emblem or is it a lacquer type paint?

It's moulded plastic, black all the way through. I remember it being very glossy.

Just buy a simple plastic polish, no kit needed just plastic polish. I.E. Merguiers and or Mothers from autozone, advance auto parts, etc.... That should take care of it. No need for wax if it's on the steering wheel unless it take a good bit of direct sunlight for a long period of time.

Thanks! It gets very little direct sunlight since I seldom drive it and keep it in the garage otherwise. I didn't know Merguiers or Mothers made a wax polish. This is the only part on my El Camino that hasn't bee restored, and this part isn't available new. :cert:

I use this stuff at work for cleaning slight scratches and getting rid of static.
They also have different grades of polish for taking out slight to deep scratches.

and this for deeper scratches.

and then this for heavier scratches.

Yeah just get a plastic polish, I like meguiers for their plastic polish. Put some on a microfiber towel about half a dime size and rub with a little elbow grease till you get the results you want.

1. Brasso, gently used.
2. Toothpaste on a soft cloth.
I've had success with both.
Start with toothpaste, not the gel kind.
It's just abrasive enough that it may work.

And...I've used a clear plastic polish from motorcycle shops/suppliers. Many riders use it for their windshields or helmet visors. The toothpaste mentioned is another good idea. You just don't want something that is TOO abrasive, else, you are just adding scratches vs. removing them.

Larry, I use this stuff on everything. It very fine and doesn't scratch stuff. I even used it to clean up an old plastic convertible window. Use a very damp cloth and a little bit of this stuff. Biker's use it alot, and most motorcycle shops sell it. :seasix:

Yes! Novus #2 works on everything (not so much #3 though-too abrasive for clear plastics)

I have tried and seen more happy horse shit for these modern headlights, and nothing I have seen works well.....
one thing I have not tried is doing a spray on urethane/polycan'tpronounce it on the covers.....
I have seen other plastics come back rather well, but have NO idea about the plastic types involved, or the affects of any of the various sprays....
do all the auto makers use the same plastic???
